Prep

We started the week by celebrating 100 Days in Prep! The Preps had a great day playing old-fashioned games with their buddies and making wooden peg dolls. They reflected on their learning achievements since starting school in January.

Literacy

In literacy, the students have started reading rotations three mornings a week. During the rotations, the students independently practise the following;

  • letter-sound knowledge by sounding out and blending words using Pop Its
  •  practise saying, reading and writing tricky words,
  • participate in guided reading sessions with Miss Melanie,
  • independent reading on Wushka
  • phonics board game connected with the reader from the guided reading session

Two new letter/sound characters have been introduced to the students Danny Dingo and Harry Hippo. The structure of writing a simple sentence has been the focus of our writing sessions. The students have identified a sentence's 'who' and 'what'. 'Who' in a sentence refers to a person or an animal, and 'What' refers to an object.

Maths

Our maths focus has been subtraction. The students have had opportunities to engage in hands-on learning tasks to explore the concept of counting back using number lines to solve subtraction problems. We also remember that we begin with the biggest number and end up with a little. During our maths activities, we practising using questioning prompts to explain our mathematical reasoning and thinking to others.

Inquiry

We explored the concept of friendship and made 'friendship' soup. The students worked in small groups and discussed the qualities of friendship. Within these small groups, the students created their friendship soup recipes and shared their soup recipes with the class.
