Wellbeing

At St Francis Xavier, we adopt a whole school approach to our student wellbeing programs and social-emotional teaching and learning. As educators, we understand the impact that positive and strong relationships have on a child's learning and development. In today's changing world, it is vital that we take the time to explicitly teach our young people how to be resilient, mindful and connected. By adopting these attributes, students have a better opportunity to be ready to learn and bounce back from adversity.

There are so many great programs available that we, at SFX, take the best parts of the best programs and adapt them to meet the needs of our students.

The Berry Street Education Model (BSEM) provides strategies for teaching and learning that enables teachers to increase engagement of students with complex, unmet learning needs and to successfully improve all students’ self-regulation, relationships, wellbeing, growth and academic achievement. Our pedagogical strategies incorporate trauma-informed teaching, positive education, and wellbeing practices. (https://www.berrystreet.org.au/learning-and-resources/berry-street-education-model)

Throughout each day, all classes participate in mindful activities to support their readiness to learn. Ask your children what it means to be present, centred and grounded. We encourage teachers to plan movement and brain breaks into their teaching and learning sessions. This enables students to shift their energy and re-focus on their tasks.

The Body Domain of the BSEM curriculum is a focus in classrooms this term. It supports students' capacity for physical and emotional regulation of stress responses, de-escalation and focus.
