LITERACY - Vira Pirrotta

National Science week promotes and encourages interest in science, engineering, mathematics, technology and innovation. As a school, we will celebrate National Science Week from Monday the 13th to Friday the 21st of August

During the week, students will have the opportunity to be involved in many different experiments. Each year level has some exciting activities planned. We will provide more information as the dates get closer. To engage families and promote a love of science, there are many events planned during August.

Below are some of the local events you may be interested in.

Please visit https://www.scienceweek.net.au/ and click the find event tab for more information and events.

 BOOK WEEK

During this week, we as a school will celebrate books and Australian children's authors and illustrators. The classroom teachers and staff will develop activities to promote the love of reading, run competitions and celebrate with a book character parade. More information will be sent home closer to the date.

Please note there has been a date change to the Book Week parade. The parade will now take place on Tuesday 23rd of August at 9am. All parents are welcome to attend.

NUMERACY - Colleen Monaghan

Thanks to all the parents and grandparents that came along to the math sessions I last week. It was great to have so many attend and hopefully walk away with a better idea on how to support their child with their table facts.

Helping your child with learning their tables.

Here are some of the ideas we explored:

  1. Cover the multiplication table, starting with the “easy” numbers. (2,5,10 )
  2. Show how the commutative property makes things easier.
  3.  Break memorization down into easy steps. (sort tables with Goodies and Baddies)
  4.  Introduce the associative and distributive properties. (move numbers around to make it easier and break numbers down to work with the parts)
  5. Play  Math Games.

•Remember short but easy to implement 5-10 minutes a day scattered throughout the year yields powerful results (Marzano, Pickering and Pollock 2001) and varying the practice activities ensures that students stay motivated and engaged in learning their facts.

Here are the various strategies for teaching Multiplication

Build up          3 times tables = 2 X  +  1          6 times  table= 5 X  + 1  X

Build down    9 times table = 10 X - 1 X          4 times table= 5X- 1X

Use doubles  2 times (double);  4 times (double/double); 8 times (double/double/double)

Partitioning    7 times tables = 5 X + 2 X

Use ten            5 times tables = 10 x Halved

Finger tricks   9 times table

Looking forward to celebrating the Foundation 100 days of school this Wednesday.

VISUAL ARTS -Joe Frazzetto

Year 3/4

Year 3/4 students chose an animal to explore and researched its features and characteristics to create a 3D wire sculpture. Firstly, the students searched the web to find out what their animals looked like and then they sketched their animals. After that, they researched about what a wire sculpture looked like and designed their own wire sculpture for their chosen animal in their visual diary.

Using a variety of materials such as wire sculpture, pipe cleaners, ribbon and other recyclable materials the Year 3/4 students created and constructed their own  3D wire sculpture of their favourite animal.

Year 1/2

Year 1/2 students were asked to draw a sketch of an insect or reptile that they saw at the incursion in their visual diary. They focused on the animal’s features and characteristics, shape, patterns and colour/s.

Using Magic Clay, the Year 1/2 students moulded their animal into a three-dimensional sculpture. We looked at the Indigenous colours from our first custodian’s flag colours- Black, Yellow and Red. The students chose one of the colours to paint their animal sculptures.

Lastly, the Year 1/2 students used silver, gold and black makers to draw dots and lines to create their own unique animal sculptures.

BUONGIORNO!

Buongiorno a tutti! (Good Morning to all!) 🙂

In this week’s newsletter, I would like to say grazie, (thank you), to all the nonni,  (grandparents) that came to last week’s school mass for grandparents day. It was lovely to see so many nonni e zii (aunties and uncles) both in the chiesa (church) and in the aule (classrooms).

I would also like to make a special mention to Sanjay in 5/6CG, for doing a great job with his reading in Italiano for Prayers of the Faithful. It was lovely hearing you read with great clarity, confidence and fluency. Bravo Sanjay!

Today I have also included photos taken of some of the nonni e zia that came into one of the Italian sessions last martedì mattina, (Tuesday morning). It was lovely meeting you all and I’m sure your nipoti were very proud of you coming to visit them at school.

Grazie e buona settimana a tutti!
