Book Week 2022: “Dreaming with eyes open…”

Each year since 1945 the CBCA has brought children and books together across Australia through CBCA Book Week. During this time schools and public libraries spend one glorious week celebrating books and Australian children's authors and illustrators. All the artwork this year has been done by Jasmine Seymour.

Well-written stories will stimulate the imagination and allow the reader to dream themselves into the book. They can travel to other places and times and into imaginary worlds. A dream can act as a catalyst, a tool for change or be an inspiration. Reading about inspiring characters can encourage young people to take on challenges in their lives. They can dare to dream.

This year the GSG Library will celebrate Book Week in Week Six (23 August to 26 August). The theme this year is fabulous: “Dreaming with eyes open”, a very open-ended theme. There is so much to explore, inquire and imagine with this theme. During library sessions we are exploring the shortlisted books.  We will update you further as the term proceeds.

Teen Reading Research Survey

Discovering a ‘Good Read’: Pathways to reading for Australian teens in a digital age

In collaboration with the Head of English, we will be asking students to complete a teen reading survey early this term. This research investigates young Australians’ leisure reading tastes and practices and the people and systems that influence their choices.  The project involves a survey of secondary school students in selected schools across Australia to learn more about how teens make choices regarding the books they want to read. This data will give us valuable information on current trends in adolescent reading habits, allowing us to look at ways in which we can better cater for our students' recreational reading needs.

Researchers: The following researchers are entirely responsible for this project: Associate Professor Leonie Rutherford (Principal Investigator, Deakin University); Professor Michael Dezuanni (Queensland University of Technology); Professors Katya Johanson and Andrew Singleton (Deakin University).

Yours in all things library,
