Quantum Victoria

Quantum Victoria is working with Thornbury Primary school’s 5/6 students to redevelop their Sustainability Minecraft program. Our students will work as consultants through the process to support Quantum Victoria create incorporate the truth about the sustainable use of science and technology skills of our First People. Inspired by Dark Emu by Bruce Pascoe and the Reconciliation Week theme Grounded in Truth we embark on this journey with Quantum next term as our 5/6 mainstream classes will participate in the program and give feedback.

Reconciliatin Week

During Reconciliation Week a group of 5/6 students organised and ran a 5x5 Basketball competition during lunch time. We would like to thank all the students who participated with a Deadly sports attitude and to Keith for umpiring.

Well Done to our 5/6 Leaders who are showing us their commitment to our community and hosting events that promote our school values.

Native food garden Working Bees July

We really need helpers to get the work done ready for the TPS kids to plant for NAIDOC celebrations in term 3. We are looking at the weekends of the 13-14th and 20-21st of July. The transformation continues in front of the Babajen

This has been a long process, many years of community and student consultation, planning and fundraising as part of our ‘Garden Dreaming’ project.The aim is to create a still functional space for things like morning line up, play, the audience area for our Babajen stage, but also to create more shade, planting and seating areas. The large burgundy shade sail was the first step. Now we move on to resurfacing and landscaping.

Much of the bitumen in front of the Babajen building will be replaced with synthetic turf, new garden beds will be installed around the shade sail poles, and a larger garden bed created around the beautiful Silky Oak, Grevillea robusta in the garden area. The garden beds will be edged with rocks large enough to sit on. We will plant the garden beds with the help of the student and adult TPS community. Synthetic turf was chosen as a more suitable surface than bitumen for the flexible use requirements. Unfortunately real grass was not a viable option in such a high traffic area, we investigated this thoroughly.

Finally the bitumen on the west side of the Babajen, alongside Tree Island, to the double back gate / bin area will be replaced. We have to stick with bitumen there for practical and budget reasons. A fire truck has to be able to park on it. We’d love to do more bitumen removal, and lay more soft mulched surfaces, especially all around Tree Island, but this will be part of the Masterplan works and is funding dependant.

The works will take place over the July school holidays and into the first two weeks of term 3. Temporary fencing will be installed to keep everyone safe. We ask everyone to be mindful and patient around the work site.

Chooks over the holidays

Our chooks would love to go on holiday whilst the building works are going ahead in July. If you can provide a healthy, safe, fox proof environment for our three chooks for 3-4 weeks please email tpsenviro@gmail.com

We are investigating the possibility of providing Auslan (Australian Sign Language) classes at Thornbury Primary for any interested family or staff members.

Parents & Carers Craft Group

Kii TPS community,

Wednesday grown-up crafters are excited to initiate a TPS community feltscape project to be auctioned at this year’s Trivia night extravaganza and/or Arts Festival. The idea is this is a community based project where we would very much like contribution from each class, which will be collated by the craft group.

An underwater theme has been chosen – specifically the Great Barrier Reef. More than 70 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Traditional Owner groups have long, continuing relationships with the Great Barrier Reef region and it’s natural resources. We would like to capture the essence of it – before it becomes a memory.

We start this project Wednesday 13th June 2019. We would love for you to join us as the Arts room from 9:05am til about midday. Please bring a small sharp scissors. We will endeavour to also send more information about this project via your class carer, or you’re welcome to make contact with us via tpscraftgroup@gmail.com. We look forward to your involvement in this exciting artwork.

Mindfulness - Nothing is a problem we are learning to create change- Lee Couch

Giving kids the tools to help them identify with negative thoughts and behaviors, build self-confidence, focus, and treat others and themselves with respect and appreciation is a gift they will have for the rest of their lives.

Meditation, movement, and other mindfulness practices are becoming increasingly popular and for good reasons. Teaching kids mindfulness practices can build students’ attentiveness, respect for fellow classmates, self control, and empathy, all while reducing stress. In addition, grades are shown to improve for students who participate in mindfulness programs.

In our Mindfulness program this Term we have been focusing on being mindful of our thoughts, feelings and emotions. We have looked at the self and other awareness, understanding and identifying feelings, understanding the difference between thinking, feeling and acting, and understanding that one's actions have consequences in terms of others' feelings. We have explored mood management handling and managing difficult feelings, controlling and handling anger constructively.
