Music Camp

Almost 80 excited musicians travelled to Don Bosco Camp at Safety Beach in glorious sunshine for our annual Music Camp.  I thought it best to hear it from the students.

Student Reflections

Unfortunately in 2020, the Music Camp was cancelled due to COVID-19 lockdown and restrictions, and we weren’t able to develop or take any opportunities to perform as an orchestra or choir. But this year the Senior Ensemble has put in a flabbergasting amount of hard work and effort for the concerts so far this year, especially during Music Camp last week.

There were many opportunities to mentor the juniors and strengthen our connections with everyone, but simultaneously learn and take on new challenging pieces that were presented to us which we excitedly took on. With help from Victoria, Bec and Ms Hilliard, the Senior Ensemble was able to test their skills individually and as a whole for our new repertoire consisting of Nimrod, Lean On Me and Razzle Dazzle.

Overall we were able to reach new heights and get to know each other more. It was a lovely experience to pursue our interests in music and share our passion with our audience in the upcoming soirée!

Music Camp was a great way for Kilbreda girls to bond over a love of music. Whether it was playing musical instruments or singing, we all got a chance to come together and do something we love. As a choir member we did lots of new and interesting warm ups, we combined the Senior and Junior Choirs and got to know each other more. I learnt that even though we might think we know a lot about music there is always someone who can share more information that you might not know.

We went on beach walks and played some tiring games of basketball but being with friends was most enjoyable. I have definitely improved on working together as a choir and making our voices blend into one while still having our individual voices.

Overall Music Camp was a fun, happy and exciting experience that will always be remembered.

Music Camp was once again a successful opportunity for girls to spend time with each other and develop their musical skills. We arrived and jumped straight into our activities, with each individual group starting their pieces for the upcoming soirée. Once our activities for the day were over, we headed off on a beach walk, came home to spaghetti for dinner and then had the opportunity to either watch a movie or do some other activities.

Music Camp was an amazing opportunity and many thanks go to all the teachers who made the camp even more fantastic.

Music Camp was amazing fun and a great experience. It was a chance to meet and befriend people from all different years, and enjoy playing music together. Being in choir and orchestra was challenging as I missed something from each every time I went to the other, but they were both different environments in their own way, and great to participate in. In our spare time we played a fun game called gaga ball, and went on beach walks which were beautiful. It was a chance to work together and bond, and overall, it was a great experience.

During Music Camp, the Senior Band got together and started practising with Victoria and Bec. Our commitment to music made us practise over time. While in the band many of us shared laughs which was far more important than actually practising.

Music Camp in 2021 was so much fun! It was really wonderful to have this opportunity to practise in our ensembles, and I feel that over the two days everyone improved so much. It was such a good opportunity to get to know the band members, and spend some quality time together. I think that everyone got to know some new people, or got to know more about people they already knew.

A huge thank you to all the teachers that came along and helped us so much! It was a great experience and everyone had a great time!

Music Camp was a fun filled experience, learning lots of new music pieces and meeting new people within the Music program. Over the two days, both Senior and Junior Choir members and orchestra members learnt new pieces of music, improving on songs already learnt and learning new songs and skills. Not only was this camp filled with lots of music but a movie night, a sunset beach walk, gaga ball and basketball games, laughs and delicious food!

A big thank you to all teachers that organised such a wonderful camp and helped all students in improving their music skills. It was such an amazing experience and everyone had a very exciting time!

As a representative of the Year 12 students I enjoyed my time spent with the younger year levels. We had joint practice sessions and the seniors had the chance to assist the new instrumentalists. I even turned one of our allocated break times into a trumpet/brass lesson!

The 2021 Music Camp was no doubt my favourite of all time and I’m grateful for such an experience to happen in my last year! However, I must say, it was extremely challenging for brass members to catch a breath with such a tight-packed schedule. Although, I wonder where all the 100+ photos Mr Dalton took will go?

So there you have it, a great time and valuable learning experience for everybody, and so much progress has been made.  Many thanks to the Music staff and other staff who gave up their time and lessons to attend the Music Camp and support our musicians on their journey.

We are sure you will enjoy our Autumn Soirée concert this Thursday evening 13 May, which will also be our Juniors’ debut performance!

Music Performances

Our VCE Music students and Year 10 Music students have been busy preparing for upcoming performances.

At the Mother’s Day Breakfast on Friday 7 May, VCE music students, Ellie Carter and Michaela D’Abate, sang a beautiful rendition of the song, ‘Butterflies Fly Away’.

On Tuesday 11 May VCE Unit 1 Music students and Year 10 Music students performed their solo and group works to an appreciative audience of family and friends.  Congratulations to the students and their teacher, Ms Madeline Tabacchiera.

It was wonderful to showcase to the Kilbreda community, the performance works these Music students have been preparing for and have the opportunity to celebrate and share in their talents.

VCE Drama Excursion

In VCE Drama we are required to view a professional theatre production and write an analysis of the play.

On Saturday 24 April, the Unit 1 and Unit 3 Drama students went to see ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ at 'Chapel Off Chapel'.

In the play, we saw a conflicted Dr Jekyll, who wanted to 'push down' the darkness inside himself. However, he ended up creating Mr Hyde who did terrible things to innocent people.

Through the director's use of many production and performance areas, such as lighting and sound design, costume, props and symbol, we as the audience were shown the duality of human nature.

The play used comedy, improvisation and lots of audience involvement to create an incredibly entertaining performance. From the moment the doors opened, the actors had already transformed into their characters and welcomed us into our seats.

Throughout the performance many audience members were involved with forming the plot, including when one of our teachers, Miss Tabacchiera, who was brought in as a love interest who had broken the heart of one of the characters.

Overall, ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ was a great example of a modern take on an old story and had us hooked in right from the start.

Thank you to Mrs Holden and Miss Tabacchiera for organising a great day out for us.
