Primary Years Program at GGLPS
GGLPS teaches the Australian curriculum using the Primary Years Program (PYP) of the International Baccalaureate as a framework to impart this. There are many different aspects to the Teaching and Learning program of the school and these are some of the rich learning experiences in which the students are involved.
Learning Intentions (sometimes shortened to LI)
We intended to plant a myriad of bulbs at our property on the weekend. This was our aim and my husband, and I made a plan to help our intention come to life. Our plan included sorting the 300 bulbs, planning where they would be planted, gathering tools and working out who was doing what and where. Our intention helped to shape what we needed to get done and drove our plan to achieve what we set out to do.
As teachers design learning tasks, they think about what they intend students to learn. This is clearly communicated to students so that they understand what they are to know, understand or be able to do by the end of the lesson/s. They can talk to what students are learning, how they are learning or both. Teachers include learning intentions in their daily schedules on class whiteboards. You will find them written as headings for tasks displayed on Seesaw and tasks in student’s books. You will hear learning intentions as teachers introduce a lesson and as they summarise at the end of a lesson so students can reflect on whether they have achieved the learning intention.
Some examples of learning intentions are:
Foundations inquiring into: How to grow skills to learn and help us
Learning Intention: How Kimochis help us to identify and share our feelings
Learning Intention: Sharing our learning through speaking
Year 1/2 inquiring into: The built environment reflects communities wants and needs
Learning Intention: Identifying the features of a community
And following this…
Learning Intention: Understanding the purpose of the features in a community
Year 3/4 English:
Learning Intention: Using strategies to find ‘right fit books’
Learning Intention: Identifying the features of a historical narrative
Year 5/6 inquiring into fractions:
Learning intention: How fractions relate to real-life situations
Learning intention: How fractions relate to percentages
