Student Wellbeing

Well, it goes without saying that I am more than excited that F-2 students and all SKiPPS staff are finally returning to school next Tuesday. However I also understand that I need to be patient until all Year 3-6 students are  back on June 9th.

I hope that the following two weeks fly by - something tells me that they will and we will all be one happy school again. Nevertheless, as the sign says in the schoolyard, I will be here to welcome all of you with open arms and open hearts even though I can’t give you a hug or a high five!

And speaking of returning to school, I imagine that there may be quite a lot of students feeling a mixed range of emotions about dealing with yet another change in their routine, albeit a familiar one.

For most of us, returning to what we know as a normal routine is positive and exciting however there may be some students  for whom this is not so. It is understandable that some may be anxious about;

  • reconnecting with their classmates and friends,
  • returning to school without their older brother or sister attending
  • being away from their parent/carer each day
  • missing being at home working at their own pace
  • having the opportunity to choose assigned learning tasks and when to complete them
  • struggling with getting ready for school and being at school on time- the morning rush!
  • being at home, having more independence or more support than they are used to.

This is an opportunity for all of us to focus on the power of simple reframes to support  each other in these challenging times. Take care everyone, stay safe and see you soon.

Returning to School: Parent webinar

As we all start to turn our attentions to students returning to school over the next few weeks, we know that many children will be feeling anxious about this transition and parents may be unsure how to approach these discussions.

To support families, a special webinar 'Returning To School: Your Parenting Playbook' is taking place this Wednesday (20th May) at 8pm is being offered by Heidi Rogers, a local psychotherapist and counsellor with 17 years experience in mental health counselling and trauma therapy.

Please note, this event is not school or Education Department run or endorsed but we feel that may families may be looking for some additional, external supports to manage this difficult transition.

There is a cost of $27 for this event which can be then accessed and replayed for up to 12 months afterwards. For more information please visit www.heidirogers.training/returning-to-school
