HUMANITIES

SOCIAL EDUCATION VICTORIA (SEV) - GLOBAL COOPERATION AND CONFLICT: STUDENT SUMMIT - MONDAY 13 AUGUST

We met early and made our way into Melbourne University where we were greeted by other schools from around Melbourne. The first part of the day was a panel of speakers. Dr David Mann, a prominent human rights lawyer spoke about the role of international law in creating a better place in regards to people movement and refugees. Professor Tilman Ruff (International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (Ican) who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017) spoke about the role of civil society groups and the UN in taking action. Finally, Dr Bec Strating lectured about Human Rights law.

Students were then split into issue-based table groups. Our group were tasked to create policies, agreements and resolutions that would help combat these issues. We presented our ideas and they were voted on by other students.

After the event we went to a quiet dumpling restaurant where we ate a cheap and cheerful lunch, exchanging conversations about the event and our favourite talks. It was a great experience as we were able to meet new people and work together to resolve complex issues, while hearing differing opinions than our own.
