Winton Reflection

Term 2 Cluster Sport has seen Winton winning both basketball and soccer. Basketball was a close and thrilling game, with Winton coming out on top by 2 points. Though the Winton boys set a difficult task for the girls with a score of 5-17, the girls pulled through and won 19-17 against MacKillop. There was so much support during the game, including deafening cheers and screams of happiness and support for the players, and Winton students sporting green bow ties, hats, and capes.
There have also been many Winton students who have participate in SACCSS Sport, such as AFL and Cross Country, and their eagerness to participate in sports has been amazing!
On Thursday May 3, the year 12 Winton leaders along with year 11 cluster leader Piath and year 11 Winton student Nicole, went to the St. Vincent de Paul college conference day. The day started with a welcome and introduction to St. Vincent de Paul society. We were broken up into different groups and went to different activities. Each group went to three workshops. Between the four of us, we went to all of the workshops. There was a workshop about the op shops, just art, footsteps of Frederick program, sleep out, camps and home visits. Here are some facts we learned:
- St. Vincent de Paul was started by a young man who was asked how he was living his faith. This links with our college theme this year.
Their theme this year is youth homelessness and couch surfing is the most common form of youth homelessness.
- They run an activity each year, Just Art, which asks people to create a piece of art about the year's theme. This is interesting for our cluster that values creativity and it's a great way to spread awareness.
- St. Vincent de Paul is very conscious of the environment and as of June no longer has plastic bags. Also important to our cluster that values stewardship.
- The op shops are run as actual businesses. They have records of everything that is sold and collect the data to know what is required by the people in a stores area.
Feast day was absolutely amazing! We started the day on the green where we starred a parade around the college. Every cultural background of students at the college were represented by a flag carried by a student. Winton walked proudly behind the Winton flag to the hall. The mass was indeed different as promised. The decoration of the hall wowed us as we entered. The choir was beautiful and sang a song specially composed for our college theme, faith equals words and actions. After the mass the awards for staff service were given, congratulations to our cluster leader Shane for 5 years of service. The Homeroom stalls were after the mass and Winton had a variety of stalls and they were awesome. There was a coloured hairspray station, guess the song, hot chocolate, popcorn, glow sticks and more. Finally, it came to the most anticipated part of the day. Talent Quest. Our cluster was well represented with Melissa, Krisha, Juanita, Steven and Valentina. We can't forget the staff act either that danced through the ages and had many Winton tutor leaders in it as well as both Shane and Chloe. Feast Day 2018 was a fun filled day for all!
