Treat the Land – SPX Drought Gift Basket Collection

St Pius X College will be aiding the drought relief by gathering and delivering treat gift baskets to families worst affected by the drought in the Central NSW region of Coonabarabran and surrounding districts. St Pius X College has teamed up with Coonabarabran High School to coordinate this fundraiser.

Throughout the past 18 months farming families who rely solely on the land have been crippled with feed costs as we know, meaning all family members must do without things. Some families in the Coonabarabran area have eaten every bit of can or packaged food in their pantry, and extra money for anything social is almost impossible. So our collection of treat baskets will bring joy to these families as well as let them know that we are thinking of them. Along with food treats such as Milo, Tim-Tams, chips etc. the baskets will have school canteen vouchers and other essentials. Each basket will also have a letter written to the family by a St Pius boy. Students will also have an opportunity to chat with students from Coonabarabran High School via Skype later in the Term.

Treat the Land gift baskets will be collected in homerooms from next week, so all St Pius families are welcome to send a treat in through their school homeroom as well as a collection point in the front foyer. Treat the Land is grateful for the efforts of the Junior School Father’s Day barbeque, staff fundraising morning tea, the Edmund Rice Society, and Year 9 who are coordinating the basket collections, various staff running the ‘Fiver for a Farmer’ lunchtime barbeque in the coming weeks.

With so many areas of the school doing their individual bit for the greater cause it is obvious to see the team spirit come through in our Pius family. As Social Justice Coordinator I thank you all in advance for your efforts. Below is a link to a newsreel of the current situation in Coonabarabran.

At Monday’s assembly the Edmund Rice Society welcomed three new leaders as Mr Couani presented Thomas Jamieson, Luke Forwood and Hayden Smith with their Edmund Rice Society Leadership Badge.

The Edmund Rice Society Junior Chocolate stall will continue to run each Friday at lunch under Little Brother for the remainder of the term, all proceeds go toward funding social justice projects within the society.

Thank you for your support.
