Around the School

Year 10 & 11
What a fabulous evening at the Fashion to Fleece wool awards where O’Connor was well represented in design and modelling.
Congratulations to Year 12 student Emily Wooster and Georgia Cullen (Year 12 in 2017) whose beautiful garments were selected to be modelled!
Phoebe Biddle (Year 12), Georgia Luchich, Lily Roff and Tina Rudolph (Year 9) all looked amazing as models on the runway!
Youth UN
Year 10 students Olive Tutt and Emily Meehan attended the Regional Evatt Competition at 'The Armidale School' where they battled against other schools in a mock United Nations Security Council.
The Evatt competition is a series of resolutions designed by Youth UN. Mock UN is a global initiative created by Youth UN designed to introduce young people to international cooperations. The girls were given a series of resolutions to argue for or against.
Resolutions included organised crime in the energy sector and the issue of public misinformation. An impromptu resolution forced the team to think on the spot about the Maldives political crisis.
The competition was an amazing experience and gave both girls an insight into procedures of the United Nations.
NAIDOC
Year 10 participated in the flag raising ceremony and prayer service on Thursday during Pastoral. The event was facilitated by Mr James Russell and his capable assistants were Lara Walters, Tahlia Carson, Isabella Craig and Clancy Hedges. It was a very solemn occasion and the students were very reverent and respectful. Mr Russell challenged all Year 10 students to investigate something about Indigenous Culture this week during NAIDOC WEEK. A very fitting Ahn Do's 'Brush with Fame' on ABC last night was Adam Goodes, who spoke eloquently and emotionally about the challenges that he and many Indigenous peoples cope with everyday. What a wonderful role model. We all need to continue to work together to bridge the gap.
Mrs Channon.
Let’s Hang It! 2018
Congratulations to Kaitlynn Turley on her selection into the 2018 University of New England Schools Acquisition Art Prize “Let’s Hang”. This is a hotly contested competition with over 530 entrants from across the area out of which only 66 are selected to form the final exhibition. The exhibition will open at NERAM on Friday July 27th with the winner announced and prize giving ceremony starting from 6pm.
This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the extraordinary talents of students of all ages. The opening night also provides opportunity for the general public to have their say selecting a people choice award on the night.
The exhibition will be on display from the 27th of July till the 12th of August. Well worth a look!
Z Club
On Thursday the 26th of July O’Connor Z-Club hosted two special guests; Sergeant Gallagher and Tom Grace from Armidale police. Z-Club was pleased to present two large bags of care packages which will supply prisoners with a small sense of comfort and cleanliness. Sergeant Gallagher and Tom Grace spoke to us about how these packages will benefit both the police force in breaking down barriers and those in their custody who may not have these items on a day-to-day basis. They also invited the Z-Club to visit where these packages will be going at the Police Station. Concluding their visit they, extended their gratitude on behalf of the station and those in which the packages will be distributed to.
