Year 3-6 Sector

AP News

Hi everyone,

Where has this term gone? They say time flies when you are having fun so we must have been having heaps of fun at Brookside!

This week all the 3-6 students will be presenting their Public Product for their projects. I would like to congratulate all the students for the grit and resilience they have shown whilst completing these.

The Year 3 and 4 students will be presenting their device that will support those with a disability. They will be presenting similar to the show Shark Tank and we are all really excited to see their projects.

The Year 5 students have been a part of our Brookside Live program where they have been creating animations that will shine light on a social justice issue. I have been lucky enough to get a sneak peek at some of the animations are they are fantastic. The students have really worked well as part of small teams to create these.

The Year 6 students will be presenting several writing pieces that also raise awareness for a social justice issue. They will be holding a ‘Peaceful Protest’ and then will open their classrooms so others can see their hard work. During this time in classrooms some of the students will also be presenting their Slam Poems.

We hope to see many parents, grandparents, family and friends at these events.

I would also like to congratulate Indiana Filipovic and Devaughn King who have progressed through to Regional Athletics. That is a fantastic achievement and we wish you all the best.

Finally I would like to thank all of the parents and guardians of the students in our sector.

From home reading to Book Parade dress ups, support with Mathletics tasks to asking how your child’s day was our students come to school eager and ready to learn and it is the efforts of our parents and guardians working in partnership with our school staff that allows this. Thanks heaps!

Year 3 News

Term three has seen the introduction of formal student to teacher feedback. Listening to the children discuss the areas of learning they enjoy, where they might be feeling less successful and their suggestions for what they would like to see more of, means that the grade three teachers can incorporate more relevant learning activities. Direct feedback gives teachers ideas to make lessons even more engaging for the grade three students.

Our wonderful grade three students have also been working hard to complete their term projects in both Writing and Project Based Learning.

In Writing, the children are hand-publishing brochures detailing the causes and effects of various disabilities. They have been learning how to research and compile information into an information report for the brochure, as well as, drawing and labelling diagrams showing the effects of their chosen disability.

In PBL, the grade threes are designing a product that will attempt to solve a perceived problem for a person with a disability (the disability they focused on in their research). The problem might be one faced in school or in the broader community. The designs are certainly very creative and the students experienced and described real empathy when thinking about and discussing how we, as a society, may or may not show fairness to everyone.

Without a doubt, the highlight of the term has been our Literacy and Numeracy week celebration. With a daily maths quiz (grade three winner - Amara L, 3B), lunchtime activities and a poetry competition (winners yet to be announced), students have been having loads of fun. The book parade was also a great success with many students enjoying dressing up in their favourite story characters.

The winners in grade three were Susanna K from 3C, in her Fancy Nancy costume and Kayden L from 3B in his Where’s Wally costumes.

Year 4 News

In grade 4 we are winding down our term 3, what a term it has been! In Integrated we have just finished our ‘In Their Shoes’ project where we designed things to help a person with a disability in our school. We have all voted for the ones we like best in our classes and we will be hosting a ‘Shark Tank’ like presentation to our cohort on Friday, we are all excited to see who will win!

In maths we’ve been learning all about place value of whole numbers and decimals, it’s been great challenging ourselves. In English we have continued our work on informational report writing and we are now starting to publish our work. In health, we have moved on to a new topic on internet safety focusing on cyberbullying.

As the holidays approach, it’s great to reflect on what a great term it has been!
