Snake Safety
At OSHC the children have been learning about the heightened danger of snakes, due to the warmer summer weather, when they are most active. Hume City Council provides Snake Safety Awareness advice and we discussed it as a group. The most common Snakes in our community are the Brown, Red bellied and Black snakes. We must all be aware of their presence and remember to avoid long grassed areas and watch for them sunbaking on concrete footpaths. We talked about sharing the environment with snakes and went through a list we can follow to lessen the possibility we may run into one. Our craft was making snakes, which encouraged more discussion of our slippery neighbours, including what we should do if we run into one? (leave it be and remain calm) and who we should call? (the council if it is in an open space or a professional snake handler if one is in your home), and can we kill one? (no as it is illegal to kill snakes without a permit).
Sun Smart
Sun smart hats are to be worn during outside play at OSHC. We ask that children please bring a hat with them or leave a spare hat at the service or in their bag.
