Kangan Experience Day
Fifty Aitken College students across Years 7-9 joined students from other secondary schools in the region as guests of Kangan Institute TAFE for their annual ‘Experience Day’ on Wednesday 22 November. Previously known as ‘Try a Trade’, this wonderful opportunity allows young people to undertake ‘hands on’ experience in a variety of practical workshops as a means of gaining an insight into a specific trade and/or industry.
When the invitation to participate was first made, VET Coordinator, Mrs Caron Flynn managed the task of organising students into various workshops based on their specified interests. Options included: Carpentry, Plumbing, Electrical, Horticulture, Engineering, Nursing, Justice, Allied Health, Hospitality, Animal Studies, Music and Security. Students were able to participate in three workshops.
Aitken teachers accompanying the group had an opportunity to rotate between the workshops and saw students: construct birdboxes, strip wires, practice CPR, take blood pressure, examine a crime scene, construct a pen holder and analyse baggage screened though an x-ray machine for security. In addition to these practical and ‘fun’ activities information about industry opportunities and corresponding courses was made available.
Kangan hospitality included the provision of transport to the Broadmeadows campus and a pizza lunch which was enjoyed by all. For most of the Aitken students it was a ‘first look’ at a tertiary campus and the beginning of the career and course research that is so vital especially during the Brookhill years. For students potentially interested in VCAL the opportunity was invaluable.
Many thanks to all the students who were excellent Aitken ambassadors, Mrs Borg for coordinating the excursion and the wonderful Dunhelen staff for assistance on the day and the during the lead up to the event.
