Sustainability/Ecological Justice

Now is the time to re-think, refuse, reuse, recycle, repurpose and compost

On 6th March two of our Ecological Justice Leaders met with the Hon. Trevor Evans, Assistant Minister for Waste Reduction and Environmental Management, in Shepparton. The forum for secondary school leaders had been organised by Damian Drum, Member for Nicholls, and gave Holly Moyle and Milly Shanahan the opportunity to further deepen their understanding of and discuss issues such as waste export, recycling, renewable energies and other sustainable initiatives like using old tyres as road surfaces and trialling bacteria and microbes in landfill situations to break down plastics.

The day inspired our leaders to keep driving change here at St. Joseph’s College towards a more sustainable future.

Holly: "It was a very informative day and it was amazing to associate with students from different schools who deal with similar issues as us."

Milly: "It was an amazing experience to meet people who are so dedicated to saving our environment."

We are just at the beginning but we are already doing some good things like reducing the amount of paper we use, aiming to sort waste into food scraps (trial in the staffroom), recyclables, soft plastics, landfill and cardboard. Now is the time to re-think, refuse, reuse, recycle, repurpose and compost.
