Year 7 St. Brigid Crosses

All students in Year 7 have been learning about the life and importance of St. Brigid. At home they have used their creativity skills to make their own cross. The students are to be commended on their creativity and time management skills.

SOCIAL JUSTICE CAMP

On Thursday 5th  March, the 12 house leaders travelled to Melbourne to take part in the Social Justice Seminar. We were one of the 10 schools that attended, each run by Kildare Ministries. The students who attended wanted to be proactive leaders in their school communities in terms of social justice; so, as a group, we were able to learn and listen to each other so we could get the most out of the seminar.

Initially, we learned about the Catholic Social Teachings - caring for the common good, solidarity, human dignity, subsidiarity, preferential option for the poor, stewardship and participation - and how we can implement these further into our schools. Using this knowledge, we developed an understanding of the differences between charity and justice, and how these must be embedded into the growth of St. Joseph’s College in order to achieve a stronger Catholic identity.

As well as having teachers from schools lead the discussions, we were also spoken to by special guests. Rida Khan, a respected member of the organisation ‘Wellsprings for Women’ discussed the importance of her work, and Sister Louise spoke of issues faced by asylum seekers and the subsequent foundation of the Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project. Both of these inspiring women lead the frontier for change in their respective fields and all students present valued hearing about their areas of expertise in seeking justice for their local communities.

Overall, we as leaders of St. Joseph’s College were moved by the experience and we hope to implement what we learned into the school community, so we are able to assume responsibility, seek unity and restore reason. Ellen Bowman and Adam Brady were inspirational on this  gathering with their youthful approach. They injected current diplomatic issues from our College that reached broader than the gates of the Edmund Rice Centre, contributing to all of the Kildare Ministries colleges. We are beyond grateful, to not only these two, but also our very own Renee Oberin, who organised this eventful justice awakening, and we thank her for this.

Media

The Year 8 students have been learning how to edit in iMovie and creating convincing TV commercials. They will create a Podcast as part of their next project.

The Year 9's have been learning about writing engaging storylines for their narrative short films which must contain a shoelace as part of their storyline. The students are really enjoying filming with our new cameras!

The new Media classroom in D40 has been well received with a second green screen available for students to use, much to their excitement!
