Respectful Relationships News

Everyone in our community deserves to be respected, valued and treated equally. We know that changes in attitudes and behaviours can be achieved when positive attitudes, behaviours and equality are embedded in our education settings.

Respectful Relationships is about embedding a culture of respect and equality across our entire community, from our classrooms to staffrooms, sporting fields, fetes and social events. This approach leads to positive impacts on students' academic outcomes, their mental health, classroom behaviour, and relationships between teachers and students.

Together, we can lead the way in saying yes to respect and equality, and creating genuine and lasting change so that every child has the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

The EDSC Respectful Relationships Pledge:

"All members of our school community have a responsibility to stand up against family violence and the misuse of gender power and control. We foster relationships that are respectful, caring and fair."

If you or anyone you know is experiencing domestic violence the following services are available

If you or someone you know is in immediate danger call 000 and ask for the police.

What we'll be doing

Low stakes fun vibes and the chance to chat with other LGBTQIA+ young people!

Other things to do during Virtual Chill Out:

  • Mindful stretching
  • Reading

What to expect:

This is not a support or discussion group – you can chat with others using the chat box, but this is mostly a chance for you to take some time and space to chill while hanging with your LGBTQIA+ youth community.

As always, this is an alcohol, drug and smoke-free event and is moderated by a Youth Worker.

This event is for connecting with each other in a chill, low-stakes, low-octane setting. If you'd like something a little more upbeat (with DJs, drag and performances), we have a few other digital and in-person dance parties up our sleeves in the coming months!

Accessibility

  • Captioned
  • Youth Workers will be moderating the event.
  • Alcohol, drug and vape free.
  • The digital environment of this event is low-sensory.

If you're a parent or carer:

We know it can be daunting attending an LGBTQIA+ youth event, and your young person might need some encouragement to get there. To comply with child safety standards, we can’t allow parents or adults to be actively engaged in our events.

In saying this, you’re more than welcome to support your child by setting up the technology with them and helping them access the event. From there, you can just hangout nearby and check in on them if you need. Allowing them to engage in the event by themselves will help them build confidence and feel more connected to their youth community.

Rest assured, our Youth Workers, volunteers and Minus18 staff will be there to make sure your child has the sparkliest and safest experience possible.

If you would like to get in touch to discuss this more please reach out at platforms@minus18.org.au

RR Website of the Week

Deadly Story

https://deadlystory.com/

In recognition of NAIDOC Week in July, we wanted to shine a spotlight on a great resource for all people to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.

Deadly Story is a cultural resource portal that aims to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people who are in out-of-home care, to grow in their knowledge of who they are and where they come from as well as support their growing connection to Culture, Country and Community.

We provide this resource because we know that increased knowledge of culture can be internalised to support healing, increase protective factors, help with resilience, self-esteem and pride and lead to better health and wellbeing overall.

How was Deadly Story Developed?

In Victoria, it is a Legislative requirement that all Aboriginal children in out-of-home care are to be provided with a cultural plan that supports their case plan. This requirement is outlined in the Children, Youth and Families Act 2005.

Unfortunately, there was a lot of culturally inappropriate and incorrect information being included in these plans as they were not being developed with a cultural lens or with the appropriate permissions and resources.

It was realised that some sort of portal that held correct and appropriate information that was approved and endorsed by the communities the information was in reference to was necessary. In November 2017 Deadly Story officially launched and has continued to develop its content to support children and young people in out-of-home care over the years.

Our Partners

Deadly Story is the result of a partnership between VACCASNAICCThe Koorie Heritage TrustThe Federation of Victorian Traditional Owners Corporation and Brightlabs, in conjunction with the Department of Health & Human Services.

About the content

The content on this website is collected from many sources along with discussions with community members, including Elders and other Leaders, community organisations, land councils and other cultural information websites. When necessary, the sources that are used in the development of pages will be included in the article.

Deadly Story understands that there are many important discussions currently taking place in community including conversations about land boundaries, language and politics. Some of the pages on our website may hold conflicting information regarding these topics and while we understand that this can be frustrating, we are doing our best to provide the knowledge that is appropriate to the topic and mob being discussed.

These pages are designed primarily for kids in out-of-home care who may be disconnected from their culture. It is for this reason we are prioritising their need to know who they are and where they come from over the community politics and discussions taking place. As information is agreed upon, changes will be made to reflect that within the website.

Although every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy, currency and reliability of information, users are responsible for making their own assessment of the information within the site, and for verifying relevant representations, statements and information.

Our website has links to and from this site that are operated or created by or for organisations outside of VACCA. Those organisations are solely responsible for the operation and information found on their respective websites.
