Knox Grammar School and Ravenswood School for Girls Student-Led Wellbeing Conference

Last Friday, Joe Lonergan, Jose Monk, Patrick Frost and I attended the 2023 Knox and Ravenswood Student-led Wellbeing Conference. We listened to Martin Heppell (Former St Kilda AFL player and founder of The Resilience Project) speak about the importance of practicing gratitude, optimism and authenticity. We also attended Knox/Ravenswood student-led workshops on the themes of gratitude, motivation, resilience and ‘giving back’, connected with other school representatives and overall, took away some insights that can be brought to the St Pius community. Thank you to Ms Janes and Mr Brannan for the opportunity.

Science Club

This week in Science Club, the boys made their own compasses. They did this by magnetising needles in the N-S direction, to align the magnetic domains in the same direction as a compass. This was the last Science Club for Term 2. We look forward to seeing the students again in Term 3.

Microfiction Competition

This year’s Microfiction Competition has begun! Last year’s competition drew over one hundred entries over two rounds and we are expecting this year’s to be even bigger! Students and staff are invited to submit a story that contains no more than 100 words and the unique word “blossom”, as well as the action of “skipping”. There is only one entry per student and the best of the best will progress to the final round in Term 3. The final round will be held as a live event at school, with students getting an hour to compose their story to the unique parameters set.

The first round will be open until the end of Term 2, so there is plenty of time to craft your story and enter.

Strength and Conditioning

Testing week.  It will give you direct feedback on how you are tracking with your training, and it also gives us a really good indication of how we are doing as program. This week influences where we steer the program over the next few months. Below is a breakdown of the tests and how they should be conducted. The testing will occur over the week and it’s important to understand that these sessions are not workouts, they are all-out efforts. This is the part where you find out where you really are compared to where you think you are. Do these tests in the order they are displayed in the link below and you should have a decent day out! To record your scores you must add your data into the first Thursday of November in your calendar OR add to excel spread sheet a coach will have. Take your time with the testing, don’t rush it like a session or a normal workout. Don't complete all in one session. Record your data in the excel spread sheet in the laptop in the gym.

Push-Up Challenge

The Push-Up Challenge has started. The students can register with the information below.

The Push-Up Challenge participants will complete 3,144 push-ups over 23 days to raise awareness and funds for mental health. Each of these push-ups represents a life that was lost to suicide in 2021.

Sounds like too many push-ups? No problems, alternatives to push-ups are allowed - think squats, lunges or sit-ups - and many people opt to take on half of the target (that's 1,572 over 23 days).

It is free to take part. There’s also an app where you can check on how the rest of your crew are progressing during the event. To get involved, create or join a team through our Community page.
