The Regional Engagement Enterprise

TREEnglish

Our Year 9 English students have just completed a unit of work centered on sustainability in Orange. The students researched one of four areas in which sustainability could be enhanced in the local region and then showcased their knowledge in a chosen text type. They were lucky to participate in a class seminar featuring some of our region's experts in agricultural innovation, tourism, the 'paddock to plate' movement and regional wellbeing.

Year 9 Commerce Business Mentors

Over the last three weeks our Year 9 Commerce students have been immersed in entrepreneurial pursuits with the assistance of their Business Mentors. Eloise Mirrington (Ikigai Studio Australia), Stefan Birmilli (Cured) and Jo Howarth (Ironbark Café ) have been on hand with each of the classes to share their business journey and experience. The students have completed a business plan which they pitched to their teacher as well as their Business Mentor before being given their startup funds and approval to put their business into action. Students will have noticed that the lunchtime playground has turned into a student run marketplace where everything from face masks to chocolate dipped strawberries is on offer. A huge thank you to our Business Mentors for generously giving up their time as well as sharing their expertise with the Commerce students.

Design a Scarecrow

The brief was to design a scarecrow using upcycled materials. Applications were received across the Junior School and the high calibre of entries led to the judges awarding Winona and Leopold Wade joint winners. Winona’s Unicorn Puppy and Leo’s T-HYDREX will be created over the coming weeks with help from 1W and 2E. They will find permanent homes in the Junior School gardens next term. Thank you to all the students for submitting such amazingly creative entries.

Piglets

Our first batch of adorable Large Black heritage piglets have arrived at the Wolaroi campus. These little ones will be onsite for a few more weeks before we move them out to Windermere to enjoy the spacious paddocks. These pigs will become the first in our Paddock to Plate enterprise that will be providing quality produce to our Kinross Wolaroi School kitchen to be turned into amazing meals for our boarders.

Kindergarten Bush-Tucker Garden and Spilt Milk creation

On Friday 4 September our Kindy students were lucky to undertake an incursion to learn about the wonderful ingredients and plants that they will be growing in their very own bush tucker garden. Gerald Power from Orange Cultural Adventures shared his knowledge and passion with the students. The visit complimented their exploration of food, shelter and weather in PDHPE and Science.

Students had the opportunity to taste different Bush Tucka foods, including river mint, warrigal, macadamias, bush salt, lemon myrtle and wattle seed. They also learned about traditional hunting and gathering tools.

The students will take this knew found native food knowledge and put it to use in creating their very own Spilt Milk flavour – keep an eye out for the KWS Kindy Spilt Milk flavour in store later this year.

Year 5 OzHarvest

Year 5 OzHarvest program has been in operation all term. It’s a Science based unit which focuses on teaching the students about healthy eating, reducing food waste, developing cooking skills and it will culminate in a Year 5 Healthy Eating cookbook.

It’s time for a Spring clean

TerraCycle

TerraCycle offers free recycling programs funded by brands, manufacturers and retailers around the world to help you collect and recycle your hard-to-recycle waste.

KWS is proud to be working with TerraCycle to recycle household waste that does not go in the regular recycling. We are one of a number of collection points servicing the Orange region.

The SRC will be collecting and recycling:

  • Bread ties
  • Oral care products
  • Writing Instruments.

Collection points are outside the TREE office for the Senior School and 3D classroom in the Junior School.

Bring your items to school and place them in the box.
