Remote Learning 101

Students share their experiences and some of their work from remote learning

How I cope in remote learning is by talking to my friends and 'facetiming' them whether to work together on class tasks or after school just to catch up and talk.

I do have a routine, which I find very helpful. It's normally just following my school routines and some days after school I have dance which I need to work into my day.

The greatest challenge I have in remote learning is not getting distracted when doing my work and remembering to like the roll call posts. I have started going for runs around my neighborhood most days, it really depends on the weather and if I can be bothered.

Home schooling is a real challenge for me as its so easy to get distracted especially with the lack of supervision. I find myself on YouTube watching some fresh memes, but I have been able to get most of my work done with ease with small bumps in the road here and there.

Having a gaming console like an Xbox is really great in these trying times, especially if all your mates are on as well. It’s great to grab the controller/keyboard (for the real gamers) as soon as the clock hits 3:20 and havin’ a game after a day of schoolwork.

Remote Learning is a very different experience for me. Since I am at home, I find it is harder to maintain focus on schoolwork and quite often I find myself outside working on something.

Keeping focus on the work is my biggest challenge I think, so I have to find ways to keep focused and structure a plan of when to do work. I usually do this by attending the meetings and trying to complete that work as quickly as I can so have more time to do stuff outside.

In these times I find that going outside is a lot more crucial than it used to be because it is a good stress release. I usually ride my dirtbike or kick the footy.

I think remote learning will be a good experience to look back on in a few years and say I went through homeschool for half a year, but for now I can’t wait until we are back at school in face-to-face learning.

Over the year, our Business Management Unit 3/4 students have completed more than 780 practice tasks (which equates to around 39,000 minutes of work!). Leading the charge with this work are Darcy Moloney (79 tasks) and Rita Alkurd (58 tasks). Combining this effort with lots of teacher feedback, we've seen great improvements in our students' learning!

Year 8 student Jemaya Hassett produced this excellent news item in Year 8 English based on the book 'Falling from Grace':

Frantic search for missing person at Point Nepean

This afternoon a young girl was reported missing to the police at a small coastal town. Grace, 12, was last seen by her family at Point Nepean at around the time of 4 pm.

Her sister, Annie, has described to the rescue crews and police her appearance including her wearing a t-shirt with jeans and a small backpack.

She was last seen around the bottom of the cliff around from Point Nepean. Annie was the only person to have seen Grace right before the disappearance, so for police this made it hard to find information.

It is believed that Grace may have ended up in the water trying to save her backpack. Unfortunately, this made the search a lot harder and complicated. Rescue crews and water police are now searching for the missing person out at sea.

The latest update was at 6 pm with nothing more than her jeans being found.

Grace’s poor family are sitting in distress waiting anxiously for their daughter to be found safe and sound.

As the night has drawn closer the rescue teams are fearing for this young girl’s

safety. So please, if you have seen or heard anything, contact police or SES crews immediately.
