Grade 2 Home Learning Snapshot
Term 2 Week 8
Dear parents,
Welcome to Week 8 of Home Learning!
This week students will be participating in virtual First Aid in Schools sessions provided by St John Ambulance over Zoom on Wednesday, 9th September. Class teachers will send out the meeting codes to classes.
The timings are:
2A: 10am-11am
2B: 11am-12pm
2C: 12pm-1pm
2D: 1pm - 2pm
We appreciate your flexibility with these timings. Class teachers will also be in these Zoom sessions.
This week in writing students will focus on writing settings for narratives. We will revisit descriptive language and noun groups. Students will have opportunities to practise writing about settings in different ways each day. On Friday, they will have a chance to write a short narrative of their choice.
In reading, we will continue looking at fiction stories. Our learning focus will be on the orientation of the story. The orientation is the beginning of the story where the character(s) and setting are introduced.
The students will once again choose from the literacy choices: Read to Self, Read to Partner, Listen to Reading and Work on Writing. The activities will help the children tune into the setting of a story: where and when is it? The activities will also help the students analyse the main character(s), including considering characteristics to describe what they are like.
This week we will begin learning about Rule 7, the jobs of Secret Agent Final E. This week we will start with job 1, which is the silent final e rule. Many students will be familiar with the idea that the silent final e makes the vowel say its own name, or 2nd sound in Write to Read terminology. We will be using the Write 2 Read reading tools in our bootcamps with this rule.
We will continue to focus on multiplication this week. Our learning intention is to recognise and represent multiplication as repeated addition, groups and arrays. The whole class lessons will focus on this learning intention. Your child’s class teacher will use the information from the assessments to plan targeted small group Google Meets.
On Monday the student will play a game called ‘Land Grab’. Students can continue to practise this game every day before their Maths task. On Tuesday we will offer a selection of multiplication worksheets. We only expect the student to complete one. However, you may wish to print off the whole collection and work on them throughout the week.
We are continuing our inquiry into cultural practices. This week we have a choice board of a range of activities. Each day students can choose one activity to work on, or can work on one in greater detail over a number of days.
We hope that Wellbeing Wednesday provided a nice refresh for students and families.
We continue to encourage students to take breaks and take time to do fun indoor and outdoor activities throughout the day.
We will continue to focus on gratitude in our reflections this week and encourage students to add to their gratitude tree or jar.
