SOUTH AUSTRALIAN SPACE SCHOOL

Kathryn Lamb, IGNITE Coordinator

Congratulations to Dan (Year 11 IGNITE pictured above), who was successful in his application to attend the 2021 South Australian Space school.  In December Dan, along with other students selected from around South Australia, attended this intensive four-day residential conference.

This provided a  unique opportunity to engage in a range of practical sessions in astrology, microgravity and rocket building.  Scientists and engineers discussed careers in physics, engineering, and space science. In addition, students were able to participate in zoom meetings with a former NASA space shuttle commander and the now deputy administrator at NASA, Col. Pamela Melroy.

Below are Dan’s reflections on this experience.

I would consider myself very fortunate as only twenty students were selected to have this amazing experience.  During this 4-day camp we stayed at the Warradale Urban Camp School.  We got to meet many different people working in a range of professions from organisations such as the Department of Defence (DSTG), Lot 14 and The University of Adelaide. This was the perfect opportunity to obtain the contact details of people already working in the fields I’m interested in and to gain insight into various careers.  Personally, a highlight of the camp was the new friends I made. Overall, it was a great time, and I am now keen to apply to attend the Australian National Space Camp.

I would highly recommend the 2022 SA Space School to any Year 10 students with an interest in science as this is an opportunity to have fun, make new friends and to meet people from a range of industries.  Look out for the application details later this year and good luck!
