School Environmental Group

The new  School Environmental Group is ready for Action!

At our school we have well established vegetable beds, numerous compost bins and worm farms as well as a beautiful handmade chicken coop to house five happy chickens. Each year we continue to develop the garden space. We collect food scraps from all of our twenty-six classrooms and have well established compost bins and worm farms to process these food scraps collected on a daily basis. We have six large raised veggie beds and five beautiful cheeky chickens that help create rich compost and produce yummy eggs.

Surrounding our garden space is a colourful fence which was part of a legacy piece created and decorated by our past year six students. Our garden space is regularly visited by students who just need some time away from the classroom to refocus and benefit from its calm, peaceful surroundings and enjoy cuddling one of our friendly chickens.

Our Year 6 Environment Leaders this year are Isabella Matulic, Aidan Nyholm, Sonny Taranto and Alessia Costanzo. The two School Environmental Leaders Mrs Solari and Mrs Rayner are so grateful each year to our Year 6 Environment Leaders as every day they care for the chickens and monitor the food waste in our compost bins and worm farms. Later on in the term our Year Six Environmental leaders will hold gardening sessions at lunch time with the assistance of Mrs Rayner and Mrs Solari.

We will run a number of engaging projects this year such as Nude Food Thursday, whereby students are encouraged to bring in healthy food with as little processing and packaging as possible. Furthermore, we will continue to support Aussie Bread Tags for Wheelchairs which assists disadvantaged people in South Africa to buy wheelchairs. Last year we collected over 40,000 plastic bread tags to not only support Aussie Bread Tags but we also saved them from landfill!
