Meeting Autor Cate Kennedy

On Wednesday 2nd February the students were lucky enough to meet and chat with author, Cate Kennedy.  She is the author of the highly acclaimed novel The World Beneath, which won the People's Choice Award in the NSW Premier's Literary Awards in 2010. She is also a short-story writer whose work has twice won The Age Short Story Competition and has appeared in a range of publications, including The New Yorker. Her collection, Dark Roots, was shortlisted for the Steele Rudd Award in the Queensland Premier's Literary Awards and for the Australian Literature Society Gold Medal. Kennedy is also the author of the travel memoir Sing, and Don’t Cry, and the poetry collections Joyflight and Signs of Other Fires. Her book The Taste of River Water: New and Selected Poems by Cate Kennedy, which was published in May 2011, won the Victorian Premier's Literary Awards CJ Dennis Prize for Poetry.

The students had a great afternoon meeting with her and listening to her stories.

Year 10 Camp

We would like to welcome all new Year 10 students to JMSS.

The cohort enjoyed a 3 day "camp" at Monash and JMSS.

Whilst it wasn't your typical camp, the group enjoyed making new friends, bonding and getting to know each other.

We are all really proud of this group and look forward to an incredible 2022 together.

Here are some quotes from the students about their time at camp:-

I found many of the ice breaker activities beneficial as it allowed for some people that may not have talked otherwise to be heard and introduced. I also think that the free time that was allowed around the Mannix College was beneficial, this allowed for natural socialisation around the pool rooms, table tennis, pianos, and the x boxes. I found this important as it allowed the groups to form and friends to be made without stress.

I also found the talent show to be beneficial as it allowed everyone to get behind the performers. As one of the performers this was my first talent show and without the positive environment I would not have been as confident to participate.

I found time which I could spend getting to know people beneficial, such as sport and free time. I also found the student panel useful.

I personally thought that all of camp was an amazing bonding experience for everyone and helped in encouraging people to make new friends. The dancing and the talent show were some of my favourite activities because they really brought the cohort together.

I really enjoyed the camp and I would like to thank everyone who was a part of setting up this whole camp. I really had the time of my life in this camp. Thank you very much!

I have really enjoyed this first experience at JMSS. The environment is very positive and I think that it will be great for learning. I have found a lot of the teachers approachable and talkative. Thank you for such a great camp experience.

Thank you for such an amazing opportunity! For me, the camp has been extremely helpful in the start of new friendships with my cohort. I would love to thank the staff, as they have been extremely accommodating and supportive during this transition.

Thank you for the various opportunities and events at camp this year. I really enjoyed the whole camp and made many new friends. :)
