Year 5 Spotlight

An Impressive Start!

Year 5 had made an impressive start to the 2022 school year. Everyone is excited to have moved over to the WSC Year 5&6 campus.

For our start up program, we have explored our FPS mission statement, school mantra, and our four school values. This has enhanced our sense of connection as a year level and with our new classes, to build a strong community of great Year 5 learners.

Unjumbling the Mission Statement

We worked in teams to unjumble the school mission statement and then looked at the key words it included – see the pictures below. It was a real challenge!

School Vision Statement – A Reflection by Grace

As part of the Year 5 Start Up program we discover all these jumbled up words on our desks!!!

We were told it was our School Vision Statement and we were supposed to try and figure it out.

We were sent off to work in tables and try and solve it like a puzzle!!! Everyone was super excited, and we got down to it quickly. After a few struggles and some great attempts, the teacher gave us a few quick looks of the finished statement. This was super helpful and fuelled the excitement. We were able to solve the puzzle and read the School’s Vision together as a class.

It was very exciting and fun and lots felt satisfied and proud by their teamwork!!! Here it is for you to have a read of too….

‘All students feel part of the FPS community and are provided with opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills and resilience to enable them to thrive and learn in and beyond the school.’

School Values & a Building Challenge

While thinking about the four school values – Community, Creativity, Excellence and Respect, we role played scenarios and participated in a building structure challenge. See some of the pictures of us in action and our final products. We considered collaboration, creative thinking and problem solving to help us.

Creating a Coat of Arms

This week we have also worked hard on making our own unique coat of arms. We started by researching our own family coat of arms, and investigated what some of the colours, animals and symbols represented. We then designed and created our own. We hope you enjoy seeing our very own coat of arms where we chose the colours, animals, and symbols carefully to reflect aspects of ourselves.

Coat of Arms: Student Reflections

This week all the Year 5s all made coats of arms to show and celebrate the differences of everyone.

I picked my coat of armour because I think it represents parts of me.
I picked blue because it means loyalty and truthfulness and because that is what I try to do. I picked yellow because it means generosity and my friends sometimes refer to me as generous. I picked red because it means fortitude and I like to think that I can be strong. Then I picked a star, a flaming heart, a raven, and a lion which altogether mean nobility, passion, constancy and courage.

I chose things which I felt reflected parts of me:
I chose green because I’m full of hope, joy and my loyalty.
I chose blue because of my loyalty and I tell the truth a lot.
I chose yellow because of my generosity.
I chose a raven because it represents constancy and I constantly ask questions.
I chose a fox because I’m really smart.
I chose a moon because I am calm.
I chose a flaming heart because it represents passion, and I am passionate about animals.
I chose a feather because it represents patience, and I can be very patient.

Everything on my coat of arms is something that I like. I love cricket. I played it on the holidays. I like foxes and lions – yellow and black, and I like guitar a lot.

Foxes represent cleverness and lions represent courage. Black represents constancy and yellow, generosity. The Moon represents serenity.

I chose to colour my shield purple because it represents sovereignty and justice. I also drew a griffin – bravery, a unicorn – extreme courage, two crescent moons – enlightenment and serenity, two stars – nobility. I also included some of my personal interests and passions such as an owl – my favourite animal, playing a guitar - which I play, two netballs – I play netback and soccer ball – I play soccer and the background is red because that’s my favourite colour.

Doing the coat of arms was a really fun activity and I hope to do it again.

The whole class contributed to make many wonderful artworks and they will be put around the Wingrove campus. From exploring our family coat of arms, to making our own, it was a fun activity all around.

When we were researching our family coat of arms, I found it interesting to see the same coat of arms that generations of my family have looked up to. When we were making our own, I put a unicorn for extreme courage, a castle for protectiveness, a sun for glory, and a couple more like flaming heart and star. It was a really fun and creative activity and I hope to do it again.

I had so much fun making this! I put an eagle on because I believe I am good at leadership. I also put on a star and heart because I think I show a lot of sincerity and nobility.

Making our coat of arms was so much fun. First, we did some research by looking up our family coat of arms. Mine had a lion which is the symbol of courage. But my favourite part was making our own coat of arms. Mine had lots of black in it and it means constancy and grief. It was a lot of fun, and I will remember it for a long time.
