JAPANESE GARDEN

VCAL students created a Japanese garden with Cherry Blossom Trees, Camellias and a commemorative plaque to celebrate the visit of Japanese students and teachers .

SUSTAINABILITY

Mrs Blackley’s Intermediate VCAL class has worked hard on redeveloping the vegetable garden behind the Music Centre on Wallace St. We  have built six raised garden beds and are currently growing silver beet, broccoli, herbs, and peas. We have also planted six fruit trees, berries and have four chickens that are producing lovely farm fresh eggs. We have affiliated the school with the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden and are using some of the fresh produce during our cooking session. Members of our school community are invited to have lunch with us every Tuesday where we acknowledge their input into our school lives.

We have plans to pave an area of the garden and to build some furniture that we can relax in when we have finished our work. Any donations of seedlings, seeds, mulch, chicken feed etc would be gratefully received.

VCAL – CREATING A BETTER ENVIRONMENT

Senior VCAL Students have been recently nominated for the Junior Landcare Awards and have been invited to send a group of representatives to Government House in Melbourne for the upcoming awards ceremony (watch this space for photos!) This is the third year our VCAL students have been involved with the Bairnsdale Urban Landcare Group and they were very excited to hear about the nomination.

The students have been working with the Landcare Group and adults with a disability from Noweyung. They have been maintaining a section of the Mitchell River Walking track which runs along the north bank of the River from the Lind (WyYung bridge) to Howitt park.

The students have been preparing the site for National Tree day on Sunday 28th July, where the Scouts will plant over 450 seedlings. In addition they have planted about 100 seedlings, including native grasses, shrubs, creepers and trees. They have also applied guards and mulch to protect and secure the seedlings. Back at school students have been designing and building bird boxes in order to help attract more native birds to the local environment.

Year 12 student Alesha Harrison says, “This has been an amazing opportunity and has opened my eyes to working with people with a disability as well as working in the natural environment. It has also opened my eyes in terms of making me feel more connected to the local community”. All the students are excited about the nomination and feel proud their hard work has been recognised.

BSC Hosts an Information Evening for Parents of Year 12 Students

Bairnsdale Secondary College students and staff have been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to work with Education Consultant and former Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority’s Chief Assessor for VCE English, Mr Ross Huggard.

With the external exam period only 12 weeks away, the College has taken the opportunity to invite parents of our current Year 12 VCE cohort to an information and support session hosted by Mr Huggard on Monday August 12th from 5:30-6:30pm in the school’s Malgobila LRC.

During the evening Mr Huggard will lead a discussion about how as parents, you can support your child and help prepare them for busy times ahead to ensure that they are able to be at their best during exam time.

Invitational letters have been sent home with all Year 12 VCE students. The College would like to see as many parents as possible at the event.

For more information, please contact Belinda Anderson, VCE Hub Leader or Erin McLeod, English Key Learning Area Leader at the College.

Inspiring Young Women

Senior students from East Gippsland Secondary schools shared morning tea and conversation with successful, inspirational women from our local business community

The focus of the "Inspiring Young Women - 2019" event is Careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) with the opportunity for students to be inspired for their futures, gain an understanding on opportunities locally and to be encouraged to adopt a 'can do' attitude in their lives.

Clontarf Training

Its go go go on a Friday morning, Clontarf kids, teaching staff and special guests meet at 7.30 and train hard (lots of fun also). They return to the Clontarf room to Bacon and Eggs and "real coffee".

Thank you to Tim Bull MP, Brock Smith Past Student, Cade Alexander Past Student (Dux) and staff from Kmart. This is an amazing program run by an amazing team. Well done to Turk and Gussy.
