Highlighting students who are achieving great things in the community

Another Win for Trinity!

On Wednesday afternoon this week, Lucas Hall (7.4), Stefan Veselinovic (8.6) and Lachlan Reid (8.5) represented Trinity College at the Western Australian Debating League (WADL) - Schools Debating Competition and won their debate against the team from Carmel School.

Having endured several postponements prior, this long-awaited debate revolved around one of many topics sponsored by the Australian Red Cross. Through their preparation and research, students expanded on their knowledge of the work of the Australian Red Cross, the International Red Cross and the Red Crescent Movement (the Movement). They learned that Movement members are known as ‘the guardians’ of international humanitarian law (IHL) and explored the challenges faced in trying to avert human suffering and preserve life in the theatre of war and conflict in our world.

The topic for the afternoon was: This house supports the use of fully autonomous weapons in warfare with Trinity debating on the Affirmative. Both sides presented some thoughtful and well-delivered points, but it was clear that the boys’ vigour and conviction, along with their many points and clever rebuttals was what secured them the win.

It has been wonderful to work alongside these students and experience their enthusiasm for debating and we look forward to more great debates over the next three fixtures of the WADL debating season.
