Grade 2

Writing

In writing, students have continued to consolidate their knowledge on the structure of persuasive writing. The last two weeks saw the grade 2’s convince their peers why they think they should be the SRC (Student Representative Council) member of their class, as well as create a resume application for their dream job. Students also explored some more persuasive devices to improve their writing, such as; emotive words, high and low modality words along with exaggerations.

Maths

Over the last two weeks the grade 2 students have been investigating data and representation. Students learnt how to create a question, in order to survey their peers and record the information in a tally chart. They then converted their data from their tally charts into pictographs and bar graphs. Two activities that the grade 2 students found exciting, was creating bar graphs from counting coloured Fruit Loops, and going outside for their math lesson to the fence near the staff car park, where they counted the number of different coloured cars. This past week, students have also learnt how to read and analyze their data, by forming statements that match their different data collections.

Reading

In reading, the grade 2 students have further developed their understanding of persuasive texts, by exploring a variety of mentor stories. They have analysed their structure as well as identified any persuasive devices used. The grade 2 students have also continued to practice their reading fluency, through independent reading, buddy reading and reading books on Wushka. Over the past two weeks, students have also studied the use of conjunctions and identified them in their iPICK books. As well as what suffixes are and how to use them.

Reminder: All grade 2 students bring home a leveled book each night to read and swap the next day. Please ensure you are signing your child’s take-home reader log once they have read each night.

Wellbeing

This week we brainstormed strategies to cope with stress. The grade 2 students collaborated and shared all the different actions they can follow when they are feeling overwhelmed and stressed. Some of the action’s students identified were:

  • Take a drink of water.
  • Go for a walk.
  • Talk to someone.
  • Play with a friend.
  • Take some deep breaths.
  • Ask for help.
  • Positive self-talk.

Humanities

Our humanities program over the last two weeks, saw our grade 2 students explore connections between people and places in the local community. Students were able to participate in a mapping activity, where they drew their local area, ensuring they included places ‘near’ and ‘far’. They also had the opportunity to create a postcard to send to an imaginary friend and choose a place that is special to them and tell us why.
