Grade 1

Reading

In Reading, the students have been focusing on the sounds ‘or’ and ‘ng’. They have practised saying the sounds, identifying and decoding words that include these sounds. Students have enjoyed reading books on Wushka, reading decodable texts and identifying our focus sounds within texts.

Writing

In Writing, students have started exploring conjunctions which are words that join ideas together. They have been very engaged in their writing and have used conjunctions such as ‘and’, ‘but’ and ‘so’. Students have continued with our unit on Information Reports and have had an opportunity to plan, draft, revise, edit and publish reports on different animals such as koalas, wombats, emus and Tasmanian devils.

Maths

During the past fortnight in Maths, students have started exploring shapes! The Grade 1 students engaged in learning about both 2D and 3D shapes. They were able to learn about the features of shapes and identify the amounts of sides, corners and faces each shape has. Students participated in a range of fun, hands-on activities such as shape hunts in the learning community, creating their own shape pictures using blocks as well as creating 3D shape models out of playdough and matchsticks. The Grade 1 students had a great time learning all about shapes.
