Literacy

I've been thinking a lot about literacy lately. It encompasses a wide variety of skills and can be supported in many ways. Here are some strategies identified in the attached document that might work for your family to support literacy development in your primary school-aged child:

  • Story sharing: Share stories from your culture or your family
  • Ask questions that require more than a 'yes/no' answer
  • Story retell - talk about what happened at the start, the middle and the end
  • Encourage creative writing (dictation is a powerful tool to support this where required)
  • Encourage the expansion of vocabulary such as "the house is big" could be "the house is enormous"
  • Check in with the meanings of tricky words
  • Re-reading a book is ok!
  • Ask questions that require your child to predict what will happen next
  • Mix up the reading routine - e.g.: taking turns of reading sentences, chapters etc. and sharing reading with other family members
  • Incidental use of rhyming words and playing with rhymes
  • Encourage your child to use their imagination through drawing.

If you have any concerns about your child's literacy development, please reach out to their classroom teacher.
