Upper Primary Update

The Upper Primary students have had a fantastic first semester! They have worked hard focusing on their Individual Learning Goals, curricular lessons as well as self-regulation and functional skills.

For maths this term, we explicitly modelled numeral concepts such as addition and subtraction through a variety of numbers through hands-on materials, sensory tubs, and template activities. Students enjoyed exploring fractions such as understanding the idea of a ‘whole’, ‘half’ and ‘quarter’. Furthermore, we also investigated simple maps, skip counting, patterns and time.

For English, students interacted with a range of texts through whole-class and one-on-one reading. Students then participated in activities with these texts where they focused on retelling the story, making text connections and giving their opinions using visuals, eye-gazes, verbal language and/or their AAC. Students were also exposed to different letter phonics and digraphs every fortnight. We incorporated this skill into students learning through sensory play, AAC, texts and interactive activities.

For Geography, students revisited the weather and seasons and had the opportunity to learn about the Kulin Peoples’ seasons. Students explored these concepts and how this effects the weather patterns and the environment.

Furthermore, students had a fun and enjoyable term swimming in our hydro-pool. Our swim teacher, Mary did a fantastic job conducting one-on-one, explicit lessons where students did wonderfully showcasing their swimming skills. Students enjoyed playing with pool equipment, splashing in the water, and interacting with peers and teachers.

Lastly, on the 20th of May, we celebrated education week by inviting our students’ parents and families to school. Students loved seeing their families in their learning space and showcasing their amazing work and progress. Students and families participated in games and went on a scavenger hunt around the school and their classroom.

We had such a great semester and look forward to next semester where we will have opportunities to do excursion and incursions and focus on further curriculum activities.

A reminder to families that reports went out on Compass on Friday, the 9th of June and are still available on Compass now. Students’ Individual Learning Plans will be available on the 14th of July.

Thank you!
