In & Out of the Classroom

Year 7-8 Reconciliation Camp

This week the Middle Years Aboriginal students had the opportunity to visit Murray Field Station on Bruny Island for a three-day camp with Elder Uncle Rodney Dillon and Aboriginal Community member Carleeta Thomas. They connected with Tasmanian Aboriginal culture and history while visiting significant sites such as Mission Bay, Truganini Lake, Truganini Point and Great Bay and engaged in a range of activities such as swimming, diving, fishing, bushwalking, food gathering, and storytelling; all with a strong focus on the Aboriginal history of Bruny Island.

The Bruny Island camp is described as one of our important deliverables in our Reconciliation Action Plan Elders and Traditional Owners Share Histories and Culture. The boys had the opportunity to hear from Uncle Rodney how Murrayfield came to be returned to the Aboriginal community, and Carleeta and Uncle Rodney spent many conversations talking about the life of Nuenonne woman Truganini and the continuing importance of her story to our lives today.

From Gumnuts to Buttons

This week our Year 9 History classes participated in a visual and interactive workshop led by First Nations voices called From Gumnuts to Buttons. Joined by a variety of Administration, Learning Support, Leadership and teaching staff, the boys engaged with respect, empathy and a growing understanding in this truth-telling experience of the colonial history of lutruwita Tasmania. The workshops were led by Jamie Graham-Blair, Carleeta Thomas and Harley Mansell and we thank them for their generosity and support in sharing this history and their own personal stories with us.

Sports Science 3

Students have recently been measuring the impact that different types and intensities of exercise have on an individual’s heart rate using heart rate monitors. The class have also moved onto their third major unit, Sport Psychology, which looks at self-confidence and self-efficacy, goal setting, preparation for competition, motivation, stress and anxiety, concentration and visualisation.
