Acting Head of Junior School

Mrs Sandra Mazengarb

What a wonderful start to the term the boys have had. It has been so nice to see the boy connecting with their friends from all Year groups. Term 2 is shaping up to be a very busy term.

Cross Country

Last Thursday, Year 3-6 had the pleasure of running in the SVC House Cross Country Carnival at Austins Ferry. It was a beautiful morning for it and our students ran so well. Our Year 3, 4 and 5 age group ran two laps of the 1km course and Year 6 ran three laps.

There were excellent performances in each Year group including blue-ribbon honours for:

  • Alex Mizzen for Year 6
  • Angus Newsham-West for Year 5
  • Lewis Finlay for Year 4
  • Jack Kilgour for Year 3

The team for the JSSATIS Cross Country Carnival and the Tasmanian All-Schools Cross Country Carnival will be chosen based on the top runners in each year group. More information will be forwarded to the relevant families in the next week.

Congratulations to all the boys for their participation in the cross-country and a special congratulations to those students from each year level who have made the St Virgil’s College Junior cross country team for 2023.

We will be holding an Early Years House Cross Country Carnival in Term 3, with information being forwarded in due course.

Bright Sparks’ program with TasNetworks

The Bright Sparks program is a free electrical safety in schools’ program which educates primary school aged children across Tasmania about the safe use of electricity. The trained presenter delivered interactive sessions tailored to each Year level from Kindergarten to Year 6). The Year 1 students were fascinated by electrical current and using the indicator and their bodies to make a closed circuit. The students were able to engage in identifying safety risks with different household electrical items.

Friday Afternoon Activities

We had a very successful and enjoyable start to the Junior School Friday afternoon activities. In fact, in the words of one of our Year 6 boys, “It was awesome! I can believe I get to do this at school!”

The students involved in Loose Parts Play built a music machine and a several other contraptions using their imagination and building skills.  The boys work together to design and build. In Tinkering, the boys had fun taking apart computers and machines. Discovering how they work and learn how to work safely with tools and machine parts. There was great excitement in the Bee-Bot robotics group as the student learned how to code their Bee-Bot and discover what happens if you forget to clear all previous instructions prior to pressing GO. The gardening group started preparing their garden beds ready for new fertilised soil which will arrive this week. They started planning what seasonal vegetables they should plant over the winter.  The bush walkers experienced a long and enjoyable walk in the sun through Knocklofty Reserve and only just got back in time to go home. The cooking group baked some yummy muffins and attracted a lot of attention with the fresh baking smells wafting down from the Year 5-6 block. E-sports with Mrs Pugsley was very popular with an enthusiastic group of participants. The Drama group enjoyed mirroring each other’s movements and the boy in the bowling group had lots of fun learning bowling skills. The Art group had glue everywhere as they started making the paper mache.

Boat Naming @INCAT

On Wednesday, the Junior School Choir and the Year 3 students participated in the naming ceremony for an Incat vessel. The boat will be heading to South Korea and will be used as passenger ferry from Pohang South Korea to the island of Ulleung. Officials from the South Korea community were there to bless the boat and the boys sang the Australian National Anthem beautifully, following the Korean National anthem performed by the Tasmanian Korean community. The students felt very privileged to be invited to participate in this event and they represented the College with pride.
