EAL (English as an Additional Language) Program

EAL Teachers not only work individually and in groups with students that have an additional language to English, they also work with whole classes supporting language needs and promoting cultural awareness.

This term, Miss La Hood and Ms Holst collaboratively developed a short integrated unit focusing on the Chinese Mid Autumn Festival. The Mid Autumn Festival or Moon Festival is celebrated by Chinese communities across the world and is occurring on the 24th September this year.

The students of 3/4M learnt about Moon Cakes and the Moon Festival. Information ranged from historical and geographical facts to cultural customs and specific vocabulary associated with the topic. They were asked to create an informative text to ‘teach’ an audience of their choice about the Mid Autumn Festival.

Jaehee was so enthused about the topic he bought in red bean paste and honey cake samples for his classmates to try. Eliza, Kira and Sophia were equally keen to experience new flavours and textures.
Clair’s favourite is the sweet bean paste.
Nathalia and Katelyn enjoy a discussion about what they are tasting.
Students in 3/4M used Chinese newspapers, crayons and paint washes to create artworks depicting the tall apartments found in Chinese cities against a night sky background with a full moon and fireworks exploding. KWAN YIN
