Payments to Office
A reminder to those families opting to pay for the Year 6 Camp or Essential Education Contributions by instalments that your second payment is now due. This is also a courtesy reminder for families of the payments that are required for upcoming events. If you have recently spoken to Jan or have made payment please disregard this reminder.

Payments can be made by cash or cheque and sent via your child's classroom cash bag in an envelope clearly labelled with your child's Name, Class and name of payment. If paying in cash please send correct amount as limited change is available.
Alternatively, payments of cash, cheque or EFTPOS can be made in person at the office between the hours of 8:15am and 4:00pm Monday to Friday. Phone payments or manual credit card payments will not be accepted. Limited change is available if making cash payments.

Ormonds Got Talent
Ormond's Got Talent is an annual talent quest exhibiting the exception skills of our students. It is open for all students in Year 3 to 6 to audition in the areas of Dance, Magic, Music, Singing or Drama. The acts are then performed for the remaining students of the school.
Auditions were held on Monday 9th and Wednesday 11th of May.
All acts will be announced on Friday 13th May.
Rehearsals will be held on Monday 30th May (and Tuesday if required).
Main Performance Friday 3rd June 2:00pm.
This is an event for students from all year levels so our hall will be very full. For this reason we ask that if parents wish to attend, it is only those of the students performing.
Scouts 'Our School Raffle'
It is almost that time of year for the Scout's Victoria annual raffle. Each Ormond Primary School family recieves a book of raffle tickets to sell. If you do not wish to recieve a raffle book, please contact Brodie in the office.
The Scouts Victoria 'Our School Raffle' is one of the schools biggest fundrasiers of the year with $1.50 of each $2.00 ticket sold goes directly to Ormond Primary School. Each year we have increased the amount we have raised more and more with last year raising nearly $2,500. Lets aim to crack the $3,000 mark this year!

Library News
Adam Wallace
Adam Wallace will be visiting the Students in Year 1 - 6 next Wednesday 18th May. Please ensure the permission form has been returned to your child's teacher.
Adam will be promoting his new book series 'Accidentally Awesome'. These books will be availble to order at $12 each. Adam's other book, 'Rhymes with Cartooning' is available for $15 or there will be a special deal - three books for $30.00. Adam's previous publications will also be availble to order. Each book ordered will be signed by Adam.
Donations
On several occasions over the last couple of weeks, while I have been out of the library I have returned to a surprise box or bag of anonymously donated books. Many thanks to those students, family or community members who have left books over the last couple of weeks. Your contribution to the Library is much appreciated.
Lunchtime Reading
The library is open every day at lunchtime from 1:15pm to 1:45pm for silent reading. This continues to be a popular activity for students from all year levels and as the weather gets colder I am sure the warm space will become even more so.
Schoolastic Bookclub
Thank you to everyone who purchased books using Scholastic LOOP online ordering system. Your books arrived today and will be distributed later in the week. The school received $400 from the proceeds of your purchases to buy new books for the library and for that i thank you very much.

Family Maths Evening
Thank you to our wonderful school community for making Ormond’s Mathematics Showcase evening a great success.
It was terrific to see families together, involved and enjoying all kinds of mathematics. Our aim was to provide you with an insight into some of the maths learning that occurs at school through hands-on tasks, problems and games. From reports I’ve received this morning it was lots of fun.

Year 5 ACMI Excursion
On Wednesday the 4th of May, Year 5 set off to ACMI. 5B started off with a train film, it was like we were on a train travelling through dimensions of abandoned places. It was mysterious and a little bit creepy. We then went through and watched some old films. We saw some original star wars and some of the first television sets. We have much better TVs now!
We had fun doing some interactive activities in the sensation area. We watched a cool display that had mice doing amazing circus tricks. In the voice area we got to meet the robot Dexter from Perfect Match. We also got to see some black and white Mickey Mouse cartoons. 5A also got to see the video games area.
Overall we had a great time at ACMI exploring the museum and learning more about the history of TV and film.

After having a great start to the day at ACMI, 5B and 5A now go on to something even cooler, it was called the Channel. It was a place where children get to experience what professional movie maker’s experience.
A lady waiting in the channel showed 5B a range of different music videos, some with bands putting Go Pros on their heads and some bands putting cameras on carts and putting those carts on a track, making a perfect pan shot. We started off getting into partners and picking a computer to work at. Then we put on headphones and scrolled through a range of different backgrounds, sound effects and music.
First off we picked music and put images to go over the music, then we added in voiceovers and overlapped the video. After about 50 minutes, we came down to the floor and the lady showed us some things on how to add in transitions. After that we got our work stations and scrolled through different transitions.
We raced through finding the transitions because there was only 5 minutes to go. My partner and I raced through so quickly that we even got time to try the microphone! After that we came to the floor very sadly because we had to delete our masterpieces.
We all said “thanks” to the lady and went out of the building. We collected our bags and continued the walk to the bus. We got on and went back to good ol’ school.

Worlds Greatest Shave
On Monday 2nd May, Ormond Primary held ‘The World’s Greatest Shave’ it was a huge success thanks to a number of people.
Firstly, we would like to thank the students who were brave enough to shave their heads. Well done boys!

- Year 6: Kosta, Tim, Seamus, Jack, Sam
We also would like to thank Mr Butler and the hairdressers Vanessa Zaknich, Stephanie and LJ for their time and super shaving. By coming to watch and support ‘The Great Shave’ our school raised $407.75 and the team of boys raised $2783 through sponsors.
This an outstanding achievement and all money will be going towards the Leukaemia Foundation.

On the 2nd of May the ‘World's Greatest Shave’ took place. Thirteen students put their hands up and volunteered to shave their heads for the Leukemia Foundation. We interviewed 4 students that shaved their heads, Sam, Ben, Noah and Harley.

An. To raise money for the cause, I was also influenced by others, since I am the community captain.

An. Because my hair was going out of control, and I thought it would be nice to donate to a foundation.

An. My head feels lighter, and it's kinda cold.

Year 1 News
Year 1 students have now begun their new inquiry unit. It is an investigation on light and sound. We are learning about the sources, changes in light and sound and how our visual and hearing system receives light and sound. Today we will have had an incursion with Hand on Science to learn more about this unit. Later in the term our focus will be on changing materials through heating and cooling. So far the students have explored light and sound in our classroom and around the school.
In Maths, the students have been practising measuring with both formal and informal units. They had a lot of fun learning to use rulers, measuring tapes and seeing how long they were with hands, feet and unfix blocks. In the number strand, we have been learning about addition and subtraction. Students are learning various strategies to assist number problems including using number lines, tens and ones and other hands on materials.
This term in literacy students have been introduced to Readers Theatre which is them having a script that they have to read out aloud as part of a team. The children have been improving each week and learning the speaking and listening skills both as an audience and readers. Their confidence in reading is improving and they are encouraged to attempt reading with greater expression and fluency whilst working as a team.
Year 3 News
In Year 3, the students have been sharpening their addition fluency skills by playing a variety of maths games including addition war and 100 or bust. They are fun games that can be easily played at home if you want to challenge your children to a game.
Pen Pals
This year, Year 3 have connected with Moe (South Street Primary School) through a pen pal program. Each Ormond Primary School student was assigned to a Moe (South Street Primary School) student. Students were taught how to structure and plan a letter before writing their first one at the end of Term 1.
The students were over the moon this week when they received their first return letter from their pen pals. Throughout the year, students will share information about their family, hobbies and what they like to do in their free time. There has been an enthusiastic start to the pen pal program from students of both schools.
PE & Sports News
Moorabbin District Cross Country
The annual Moorabbin District Cross Country Competition for progression to the Divisional Cross Country Competition will take place on Wednesday 25th May. First race will commence at 12:30 sharp.
Permission notices for those students selected to represent Ormond PS have been sent home this week, please ensure that they are returned to school along with the required payment by the due date.

Jumper Rule
During the colder weather in term two and three, we require children to wear a jumper outside if they are not participating in sport or physical activity. Parents can exclude their children from this requirement by providing a note stating their child is not required to wear a jumper.

Mother’s Day Stall
Thanks to Lara Tinkler, Anita Campbell, Emma Windebank, Lisa Hanley and the parent volunteers for organising another great Mother’s Day Stall! It was an “all hands on deck” affair with parent volunteers helping on the “wrapping” night, on the day of the stall and at the “second chance” stall on Friday. We were really impressed with how parents offered their time to help – it really was a team effort. We hope you enjoyed your gifts! A couple of mums have asked for more details on the plants that were used. They were all succulents that should cope with being planted in a range of conditions.
Trivia Night
The Parents and Friends Trivia Night is locked in for 6th August. Each year there is an overall theme, with each table of 10 parents interpreting the theme in their own way. The theme this year is “Big Book Bash” (more details to come). Bookings for tables can be made on 20th June via a booking sheet at the school. There will be room for 16 tables of 10 people so start organising your table lists now! This is a great event that always sells out so start your planning now! We hope to see you there!
Twilight Market
Planning will shortly commence for the 2016 Ormond Primary School Twilight Market. We will be running some meetings at different times of the day (both daytime and evening) to outline how you can help. This event is the main fundraiser for the year and is a great way to support your local school community. Please watch the newsletter for more details.
2016 Entertainment Book
Ormond Primary School is pleased to offer the 2016|17 Entertainment Book to friends and family. The book is filled with offers including restaurants, hotel accommodation and activities which is especially good with the school holidays coming up. Books are $65 with 20% from every book sold going towards Ormond Primary School’s fundraising efforts.
