Maths in Year 5/6
During Term 1, students in Years 5 and 6 completed a unit on Data. They investigated the data process by posing questions, collecting data, representing data in the form of graphs and interpreting and analysing data. The students described the data using mathematical terms such as mean, median, mode and range.
Students participated in the ‘Candy Colour’ investigation in which they figured out the mean, median and mode of collections of M&Ms. They were then challenged to use the data they collected to calculate averages for the whole class! The students really enjoyed participating in this activity.
Year 5/6 students are encouraged to practise their Maths skills at home, particularly their number facts including times tables up to twelve. There are many activities to assist students such as:
Hands on
Multiplication Grids
Rolling two die to find the product of numbers

Mathletics
Mathletics is an ongoing resource used in 5/6 and students are set weekly tasks to complete at home reinforcing concepts taught at school. Mathletics is an engaging program which switches children onto Maths. It can be used on laptops, desktop computers or on devices with the Mathletics app installed. All students throughout the school have now been activated with their new school year details. If your child is still having trouble logging in or needs assistance, please contact your child's Homeroom teacher.
The program also allows students to test their skills against one another or engage in times tables songs.
