Learning Goals and Success Criteria in our Classrooms
by Anna Seccombe
We make learning clear at St Philomena’s by providing explicit learning intentions and success criteria.
A learning intention for a lesson, is a statement which describes very clearly what the teacher wants the students to know, understand and be able to do, as a result of the teaching and learning activities.
Teachers provide exemplars so that students can see what success will look like. For example, to show students very clearly what is expected in their writing, the teacher may share whole and parts of various narrative stories with students, depending on the focus of the lesson.
Students use the success criteria to self and peer-assess their learning. When this happens, students are more likely to take control or ownership of their learning, to see what they are doing well and where they need to go next in their learning. The success criteria must be very clear for this assessment to take place. This is the opportunity for educators to sit with their students and view the success criteria as if they were the child and make adjustments if needed.
