Choir Performing at Victorian Schools Music Festival

On Monday the 14th of August, Melbourne Girls’ College choir, took a tram into Federation Square to participate in the Victorian Schools Music Festival. The choir performed two songs at Deakin Edge, “How Far I’ll Go“ and “Safe and Sound” In front of five  other schools and 2 adjudicators. After we performed, one of the adjudicators gave us a master class which consisted of advising us on how we can improve and gave us ideas and inspiration. There were five school taking part and our choir did a fantastic job, being awarded a bronze shield. Over all it was a fantastic experience and I’m sure we all learnt so much from it. Hopefully we can do it again next year.

Thanks to our Choir directors, Ellyce Calder and Susan de Jong for organising our participation in this event and Ms Corry for accompanying.

Grace Rosebirch

Choir Co-Captain.

House Production

Congratulations to all students involved in this year’s House Production, “It’s Not the End of the World, or is it…?”

All four Houses approached the theme with a different interpretation and wrote their scripts from scratch. Maris featured a meteor, Chisholm focused on Natural Disasters, Melba investigated a disease outbreak and Lyons fought off a zombie apocalypse.

Our biannual House Production is created by students and is totally student run, led by our army of Arts Captains. Students directed, choreographed, organized costumes, makeup, props, music and projections and most importantly, worked tirelessly together across year levels, collaborating creatively to showcase their entertaining and thought provoking performances.

Teacher News

On Sunday 20th August our music teachers Tony Hicks and Wen Chin performed with British space rock band Spiritualized as members of the Australian Art Orchestra and the Consort of Melbourne. This headline performance closed the Supersense Festival held at Hamer Hall. Spiritualized is a band that reaches across genre lines- drones, gospel, garage rock, free jazz, dizzying orchestration and minimalism. The orchestra and choir had two rehearsal sessions with Spiritualized to work out the structure of the songs while allowing room for improvisation within free form sections. True to the phrase “Anything can happen”, it was up to the musicians to trust each other and allow the music to dictate the performance. It was a fantastic experience and both of us felt inspired, invigorated and grateful for the performance opportunity.

Zelman Symphony Babi Yar 75th Anniversary Commemoration Concert – Free Seats for Secondary Students

Zelman Symphony is a well-known Melbourne not-for-profit community orchestra with a history going back to 1906 (www.zelmansymphony.org.au).

The orchestra is proud to be able to be producing a most important concert in Hamer Hall @ 2pm on Sunday 17th September.  The concert will commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the massacres perpetrated by the Nazis and their collaborators at Babi Yar near Kiev during WWII.

The centrepiece of the concert will be Shostakovich Symphony No 13, Babi Yar, which sets a poem of the same name by the illustrious Russian poet, Yevgeny Yevtushenko, to music.  There will be a short commemorative ceremony before the symphony is played by a large orchestra of 95 players and sung by Adrian Tamburini backed by a 100+ voice choir.

We are fortunate that Gandel Philanthropy is funding free tickets for a number of students from schools around Melbourne to attend this concert. We are delighted to be able to offer MGC the opportunity to send students to the concert. There are a limited number of tickets available and they will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Please let Ms Corry know it you are interested in attending ASAP.

Thank you to Dr George Deutsch, chair of the Zelman Symphony Babi Yar Organising Committee and grandfather of Mia Robinson, for this exciting opportunity.
