Women In Rotary International Women's Day Breakfast by Scarlett Cuthbertson

On Thursday March 5, myself and eight other Melbourne Girls' College students, attended the Women in Rotary International Women's Day breakfast hosted at Crown Palladium, celebrating this year's theme of "Each for Equal". The morning was MC'd by Australian comedian Husna Pasha, and we got to hear from an esteemed panel of speakers, including none other than the Melbourne Lord Mayor Sally Capp. It was an amazing experience, and I learnt so much and gained a new insight from hearing the opinions of such accomplished individuals on topics relevant to us all in today's society.

Alliance of Girls' Schools Australasia International Women's Day Breakfast by Taya Holland

On the morning of Wednesday the 11th six students from the senior school executive, Ms. Money and Ms. McDonald were given the privilege of attending the Alliance of Girls’ Schools International Women’s day breakfast. The breakfast was held in one of the beautiful rooms at the Victorian Parliament house. As we sat around glancing at the intricate portraits of past premiers we noticed there was only one of a woman. That then sparked discussion about women in roles of power as we heard from our incredible first speaker, Bridget Vallence, the member of parliament for Evelyn, who sits in our Victorian Parliament. She spoke about the difficulties faced by the women of today striving towards roles in government and legislative positions and the way the many women who now sit in our parliament are making a difference. We then heard from Yvette Arnott, an English literature teacher from MacRobertson Girls High School, who focused on female representation in society and literature. She demonstrated the subtle ways the patriarchy influences many aspects of our culture, from the English language to the statues we see around Melbourne. Each speaker was so passionate and empowering; we all sat in awe listening to their endless knowledge and the long way we still have to go to achieve equality in our society. Thank you so much to MGC and the Alliance of Girls’ Schools for this amazing opportunity.
