Science & Engineering Challenge

Students use their skills to complete the challenges

On Tuesday 5 March, thirty students from Stage 5 attended the Science and Engineering Challenge in Young.  The students competed in groups of three and four against groups of students from other schools in the region.

The students got to test out their problem solving skills, creativity, communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team.  They had to build a tower that could withstand an earthquake, furniture for an oversized dog, a rover that could travel the rocky terrain of Mars, a bionic hand as well as code breaking and planning power grids.

The main event of the day was the bridge building competition when all the schools came together to see the results of one group’s hard work for the day.  Sam, Pat, Zac and Lewis insisted on doing this activity, promising that they would be the best at it and they didn’t let us down.  Our bridge came first out of all the schools competing and held nearly as much as the bridge built by the professional engineer.

Overall we came in second and I am very proud of the efforts of all the students who came on this excursion.  It was a great day out and all the students enjoyed themselves and were so happy with how well we did.

I would like to thank Cowra Rotary for their assistance in getting us to the event.  Rotary very generously covered the cost of the bus for the day and myself and the students are very grateful for their support.
