Around the grounds

Including swimming and surfing

The final quarter has been an extremely busy and rewarding one thus far. The team hit the ground running and we have had some great teaching and learning experiences across all grades to conclude 2017.

Year 7 learnt about the importance of nutrition and food choices on their holistic health. Many classes have already enjoyed their cultural food lessons and there have been some amazing dishes shared amongst teachers and students. They have learnt the value of belonging to a peer group, strengthened their communication skills and learnt how to deal with alienation and bullying within our Belonging unit. They also attended Swim School at Fairfield Leisure Centre where 120 year 7 students learnt about water safety and first aid. They were educated and lead by PDHPE staff and also a number of year 9 and 10 students that also completed their Bronze Medallion under the leadership of Mr Condon.  As the full time whistle draws closer they are currently continuing to learn about water safety which will in conjunction with Swim School be immensely important with the upcoming hot summer days at the beach and pool to come in the holidays.

Year 8 have been involved in learning about a range of mental health related topics and how they can use people for support or help others to access support when they require it. They are also in the middle of our final unit which is ‘Fun Can be Dangerous’. This unit will enable them to make smarter decisions where risk is involved, especially with the upcoming summer school holidays.

Year 9 have been studying the risks involved in relationships and in a number of environments in our ‘Risky Relations’ unit. Hopefully the knowledge and skills will enable them to make wiser decisions in the years to come.

Year 10 finished off their year looking at groups amongst Australian society that experience discrimination and adversity and how to be more empathetic members of society. As part of their final assessment they wrote some powerful and moving speeches advocating for a number of groups experiencing discrimination.

Year 9 PASS have created some excellent presentations on Australia’s sporting identity. They have looked at past and present athletes across a multitude of sporting disciplines and presented speeches, videos and information to teachers and peers that have shown the spirit and strong sporting culture Australia has built worldwide.

Year 10 PASS finished their year learning about perceptions of leisure, lifestyle and recreation. 55 students were lucky enough to attend surf camp down in Wollongong. It was good to see so many of them stand up on a wave and also paddle through the harbour on stand up paddle boards. It was an excellent 3 days of fun, sun and surf for all involved and a great way to cap off their PASS elective.

That’s the full time whistle blowing. Stay tuned in 2017 where we will again bring you all the action from the PDHPE classrooms and sporting fields. From all of us in PDHPE we wish all students and their families a fun, sports filled and safe break. See you all in the new year.

55 wonderful year 10 students have just experienced three days of surfing, paddle boarding and Jamberoo. It was great to see so many students standing up on boards by the end of the week.
