Garden
HELPERS NEEDED: It would amazing if we could get a couple of parents who are waiting at school pick up, to volunteer to check in on the coop after the students finish for the day, just to make sure the chickens are back in their locked up pen and the gate is locked. If you can help out please email me to: clancey.mckenzie2@education.vic.gov.au
Kitchen and Garden Fundraising Stall
Have you checked out the kitchen garden stall at the office yet???
Pop in and say hello to our amazing office staff and grab yourself something you can take home that the students have been working on.
Kitchen
Following on from National Reconciliation Week our theme this week in the Kitchen is 'Indigenous Ingredients'. Such a great variety of different ingredients for our cooks this week. We learnt about culinary purposes of some indigenous plants along with their medicinal uses. Our shared table this week included Pumpkin, Cheddar and Pepperberry Damper, Warrigal Greens and Ricotta Fritters, Warrigal Greens and Feta Pie and Lemon Myrtle dressing for our Leafy Green Salad.
Thank you to everyone who kindly donated eggs to our kitchen. We were blown away by the generosity of our school community.
Next term we are starting to make preserves for the Fresh Food Fair. We will organise a preserving day at some stage so if you are keen, we would love you to come along to help out. Watch out for the upcoming dates. We are also on the look out for some excess produce in preparation for our preserving. We have a huge freezer that we would like to fill, so if you have any extra from your garden it would be much appreciated. Some that come to mind are capsicums, feijoas, persimmons, citrus and tamarillos. They can be dropped in to our school office.
If you come across any of these indigenous ingredients here are some of our recipes. We substituted wattle seed for pepperberry, pumpkin and cheddar. There is lots of warrigal greens around Blue Water lake!
Volunteers
We need your help! The kitchen and garden is a really fun place to spend an hour or 2 and we would love you to come and help out the students.
Every Wednesday the kitchen and garden comes alive and the students thrive cooking and playing in the garden, however they need your help! If you have a special skill to share or simply want to come and get your hands dirty then please get in contact with Clancey or Fleur. Your help is extremely valuable and we need more wonderful people to come along to our sessions:
Clancey for garden classes – clancey.mckenzie2@education.vic.gov.au
Fleur for kitchen classes - fleur.kilpatrick@education.vic.gov.au
Don't despair if you are not free on a Wednesday!! Please get in touch with us as there are so many opportunities to make a difference. There are lots of things you can do.
*Volunteers require a working with children check, a my gov certificate to show triple vaccination status and will need to do a brief induction at the office prior to volunteering. (only the once).
