News
The year 3 team love to spill the tea on what's going on in our cohort, read below to find out the juicy information of what our glorious students are doing at school.
Maths:
We have continued to investigate fractions of collections through Indigenous contexts such as the uses of the native black wattles and echidna quill necklaces. We have also started comparing fractions to recognise which is larger or smaller. Our confidence with fractions has improved significantly as we have developed our understanding, fluency, problem solving and reasoning.
Reading:
The students have been working hard in Reading, looking at Graeme Base as a writer. They have explored the various puzzles carefully placed throughout his books and even tried to solve them, looked at how he includes detailed illustrations that tell a story without needing words to explain what is happening and the various types of writing craft he adds throughout including our favourite, alliteration. You can see some of our exciting work below.
Writing:
In writing so far students have begun creating their own picture story books. Students are following the writing process of planning, drafting, revising, editing and publishing. They have been inspired to use Graeme Base’s craft such as powerful verbs, illustrations, puzzles and more in their stories. Check out some amazing front covers – can you make a prediction of what the story might be about?

Excursions:
A few weeks ago, the year 3’s went to Sovereign Hill, students loved panning for gold. Some students even found some of their own gold. They enjoyed the seeing the differences in time and felt like they went back to the past. During the week the Year 3’s also went to the MCG, they had fun learning about our rich sporting history. Students really enjoyed speaking to the Olympic athlete Dean Pullar and even going on the field.
We are proud of all our students' efforts, positive mindsets and look forward to acknowledging and celebrating their accomplishments with them throughout these units.
Year 3 Team
Can you believe we are more than halfway through term 3! The year 4’s cannot believe it. The year 4’s have been working very hard this term in all curriculum areas. We are very excited for the upcoming events we have this term, including our aquarium excursion and the school fun run.
Literacy
In our literacy unit, our students have been investigating the Author ‘Margaret Wild’ and understanding her Authors Craft. Through unpacking her texts and identifying themes, we have been able to put this into practice in our own writing. We have been experimenting with a range of figurative language devices such as metaphors, similes and hyperboles. We are currently in the process of creating our own picture story books trying to use short and sharp sentences, just like Margaret. The students are having lots of fun experimenting with their picture story books. We can’t wait to illustrate too!
Humanities
In our humanities unit we have just recently finished watching the movie ‘Wonder’. We have really understood what it is like to be in a position like Auggie and how people should be treated in our world today. We are learning the terms of Social Justice and what this entails. We have created our own representation of how we would illustrate the front cover for the novel ‘Wonder’.
Maths
We are progressing very well in our current fractions work for maths. Students are understanding how to convert fractions from improper to mixed number and vice versa. Along with adding and subtracting fractions too! We have just finished looking at length and had a blast with hands on learning and being able to use the trundle wheels to find different lengths around our school yard!

Year 4 Team
Reading:
In reading, we have been doing a Author Study on Roald Dahl. We have been reading different parts from all of his books and learning about his style of writing. We have had fun reading the different figurative language types such as similes, personification, onomatopoeia and his made up words! We have also been enjoyed making connections to his different texts and learnt how to correctly summarise different parts that we have read.
Writing:
In Writing we have been creating narratives! We have learnt about the structure of a narrative, how to create suspense in our writing and how to create include a moral for our story. We had such a good time creating our very own narratives that we published and then got to share with a prep class!
We are now in the publishing stage of another narrative of our own version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, where we pretend we are the golden ticket winner!
Maths:
This term in maths we have been learning about operations and the different strategies that can help us solve addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication problems. We have learnt about vertical algorithm, split strategy, area model and number lines. We have also learnt about factors and multiples of the different numbers and been practising our multiplication times tables everyday!
Kind regards,
