Prep 100th Day of school

On Friday the 29th of July, the Prep students celebrated their 100th day of school! The excitement building up to the event was huge and this was visible in the amazing projects that students created at home all about the number 100. Take a look at the fantastic display of projects in the office foyer!

At school, the students arrived to meet their teachers who had aged incredibly overnight! Meet Granny G (Miss Gauci), Mrs Old (Mrs Obremski) and Grandma M (Mrs Manisha).

Throughout the day, students were engaged in activities all about the number 100. They made a crown saying they were 100 days smarter, used the ipads to show 100 gumballs and 100 emojis, and they did 100 exercises!

Year 1

Learning in Year 1 has been fun this term!

We are now experts at writing narratives. Did you know a narrative has characters, settings, problems and solutions? We loved learning about narratives by exploring a real story called Old Tom. It is written by the author Leigh Hobbs. We even got to write our own Old Tom narrative. We planned, wrote drafts, edited our writing and even published our own books. We have many budding authors and illustrators in Year 1.

In Maths we have been very busy learning about addition and subtraction. Here are a couple of things that we have been practising: doubles 4+4=8, 2+2=4, counting on from the bigger number 9+3=12, so starting at 9 and then counting on 3 more – 10, 11, 12. Splitting numbers into tens and ones to help us add and subtract has been another cool strategy.

In Science we are learning about animals and their habitats. Some cool facts for you all…..sharks can live in the ocean because they have gills to help them breathe and ants are very strong and can carry heavy things!

In Play-based learning we are learning about maps and we even had a go at making our own maps!

Year 2

Wow! Who can believe we are more than halfway through Term 3? All students have been working very hard and learning many new things.

Reading

In Reading, we have been learning how to Find the Main Idea in a text and Summarising what we have read. In Spelling, we have continued to expand our bank of tricky words and learnt some new spelling patterns. Students should continue to practise their spelling at home, in addition to their daily reading. Don’t forget to keep adding to your Premier’s Reading Challenge list online too!

Writing

In Writing, students have written some amazing narrative texts. They have been able to plan and write simple stories that include a problem and solution. Their progress with using adjectives to describe their characters and setting has really helped make their writing more interesting. Students have also loved language experiences such as making paper snails and fairy bread to stimulate their writing. We are now beginning to look at writing information reports.

 Maths

In Maths, we have been learning about Chance and Data. Students learnt how to ask specific questions to collect data. They recorded their data using tally marks and made simple graphs to present the information. For the remainder of the term, we will be focussing on Multiplication and Division.

Science

Students have been enjoying our Physical Science topic about Push and Pull Forces. We have been making predictions and conducting simple investigations about water, air and gravity.

Play Based Learning

Students have continued their Geography unit and have been learning about Australia and New Zealand. We have looked at the states and capital cities in Australia and learnt interesting facts about both countries. Students have participated in a range of play-based activities including learning the Haka dance, tracing maps and creating sheep collages.
