On the 13th of July, the Year 9 Outdoor Education elective travelled down to Warrnambool for our camp. With bags packed and plenty of warm clothes, we headed down the Princes Freeway, through Colac and arrived in beautiful Warrnambool.
Once we arrived, we quickly checked in to our accommodation and jumped straight back on the bus, ready to spot some whales! We hiked from the notorious surf break at the flume to the lookout at Logan’s Beach. With a surprisingly large crowd on the viewing platform, we knew there must have been something in the water. After about 2 minutes of calm, we spotted her. A mother and her calf swimming and popping out of the water only 50 meters off shore. What a sight!
Day 2, we started the day with a game of mini golf at Lake Pertobe. We then travelled to Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve where we began our game of ‘spotto’. Ms Karras announced to the bus it was 2 points for a kangaroo, 3 points for a koala and 5 points for an Emu. Eyes were peeled and the game was on! After a few kangaroos and a koala, Mr Thompson sealed the win when he spotted 10 emus. (He may have driven past the emu farm on the way out).
We then headed to the foreshore for the Middle Island Tour and to meet the Marimar dogs that the movie Oddball was based on. We learnt about the introduction of the dogs to the island in order to protect the Penguin population from the foxes – a world first!
After the tour, we headed back to the accommodation, ready for our sound and lights show at Flagstaff Hill. The show told the story of the Shipwreck Coast. It took us on a journey through the ages. From local Aboriginal stories to the colourful whaling past then to events that gave the Warrnambool coastline such a savage reputation.
Day 3, it was time to head home. We packed our bags, cleaned our rooms and headed off. Thanks to Ms Karras for coming along to help us on the camp. We had an amazing time with some great memories made. Many of us will definitely return to Warrnambool!
