Staughton Radio Turns 7

Staughton College Radio achieved another significant milestone on the 15th of April 2022. The Homework Club radio show has reached 7 years on the 979FM frequency. This milestone would not have been possible without the amazing assistance from our past and present students, who give up their lunchtimes, to provide the students at Staughton College with Lunchtime Radio or after school hours at the 979FM studios providing the Melton Community with school news.
To think 7 years ago we started out as a lunchtime activity in our Staughton College radio room providing lunchtime music for the students to now transmitting a quality live show on the 979FM airwaves.
Thanks must go to 979FM staff who have supported us right through our 7 year adventure and Melton Music for providing singers to perform live on the show.
The support from Staughton College to all our radio students has been amazing and of course our radio mum, Nicole Jowett, who provides the students with cupcakes and birthday cakes for all celebration milestones.
The biggest thank you goes to the parents and guardians of our radio students, for supporting our students in radio!
I have been doing radio for around 5 years and it has been one of the best experiences of my high school years. From starting on the homework club, doing radio at Staughton College and starting my traineeship on Fresh, radio has opened me to expanding my public speaking skills outside of debating. I would like to thank Will for all he does for radio, he has been an amazing mentor and he is always appreciated for his funny radio humour.

I have been part of Staughton College radio since 2017, and the last two years I was given the privilege of being one of the radio captains working alongside Will. Being in radio for the last six years has allowed me to build my confidence in public speaking which has led to my ability to pursue other leadership positions within the school community.
Being the radio captain has allowed me to work and connect with each of our radio students, and it is a pleasure to watch and assist our junior students build up their confidence from doing lunchtime radio to going live at the 97.9FM studio. Radio has allowed me to create friendships with all kinds of students from all different year levels, and I am happy to be seen as a mentor and friend to the junior radio students.
With support from Will and Staughton College Radio, I have been given the opportunity to learn new skills which has led to being able host my own radio show which is something I hope to pursue in the future.
I’d like to thank the 97.9FM staff as well as our staff at Staughton College for all the support and assistance they have provided. I’d also like to thank Will for giving me this opportunity and for being a great mentor, without him none of this would be possible. Being part of the Staughton College Radio has been one of my favourite parts of my high school experience and it is definitely something I’m going to miss after I leave school, but I hope it can do for future students what it has done for me.
