Senior Years

Year 12s Guest Speaker

On Monday 30 May, David Schwarz a former AFL player and reformed gambling addict spoke to our Year 12 students. Despite enduring three knee reconstructions David played 173 games for the Melbourne Football Club and was the 1999 Best and Fairest award recipient.

Once he finished playing football David was compelled to address his addiction to gambling and his enormous debt to banks and the bookies. Since he stopped gambling, he has paid back all of his debt and become a strong advocate for responsible gambling. He is an ambassador for the Australian Leisure and Hospitality group and speaks to schools, sporting groups and other organisations raising awareness of the dangers and reality of gambling.

David’s presentation was personal and powerful. He spoke with candour and humility about his own experiences and the consequences of his choices on himself and his family. He attributed much of his recovery to the support of his family and encouraged students to always be open and honest with their parents. The response and engagement from students was overwhelming positive.
