Year 10 Environmental Science

We completed a practical experiment where we tested for nitrate and phosphate levels in water from Kananook Creek. Testing for nitrate and phosphate is important because if a water source has too much of them, then blue-green algae will grow rapidly. Algae produce toxins that poison the water and can consume all of the available oxygen, leaving no oxygen for other organisms in the creek. Nitrate and phosphate can end up in water sources as they are used as fertilizers for crops. We have been exploring how farming practices can impact the environment and have been weighing up the value of incorporating genetically modified organisms.

In our world today there are many environmental concerns most notably to me is floods. Floods have been affecting our earth for years and more recently it’s been causing furthermore environmental damage than before. Floods are destroying many wildlife habitats and the flood water is mostly contaminated with sewage and other hazards. These factors are causing a degradation in aquatic habitats, lower water quality and contaminated coastal food resources. All these things are causing our environment to get damaged more and being a less sustainable world for ourselves and future generations to live in.
