Benilde

Founders Day Mass & Debating

The first major event for the college in term 2 was the house debating competition. The event took place in the resource centre at lunchtime on Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th , where two ‘heats’ would take place between Benilde and McCristal, and LaSalle and Solomon respectively. The topic for the first heat was “Freedom of speech does not exist in today’s society”, and for the second heat, “If Jesus arrived in Melbourne today, he’d be happy with the state of us”. Both topics saw compelling debates, with all houses presenting well organised and engaging arguments. After two close decisions from the Competition’s adjudicator Ms Mclean, Benilde saw victory in the first heat, along with LaSalle in the second. The two houses would then play each other in the final, on Thursday 19th, where the topic followed “The future is safe in the hands of our generation”. At the conclusion of what was a captivating and at times, heated debate, Benilde came out on top, making them the overall winners for the competition. Brilliant debating from Tom Gregory Year 10, Paxton Le Year 12 and Justin Hii Year 12. A special thanks to the adjudicator Ms Mclean, Mr Beaumont and all who organised the event, and the speakers from Benilde, La Salle, McCristal and Solomon.

Next up in the college calendar was Founders Day, along with the annual Founder’s Day Mass on Friday 20th. The day started with an extended homeroom for all year levels, except Year 10, who would head to our East Bentleigh campus to celebrate Founders Day there. Back at Mentone, during homeroom it was an opportunity to chat with our mates, and Ms Lyons who made sure we didn’t go hungry with donuts and lollies from Lindy in the canteen. After homeroom ended all students were to be seated in the hall for the mass, where LaSallian brothers and other guests from the wider St Bede’s community and beyond gathered to celebrate a special day for all LaSallian schools.

House Footy

On Monday the 23rd of May the Year 12s commenced the first round of the Year 12 house football competition that consisted of Benilde taking on McCristal and Solomon vs Lasalle. These matches were both 20 minutes long and full of many funny highlights along with a few moments of football. The day was a success with the mighty Benilde pulling off a fantastic come from behind win and getting up by only a couple points this has landed us in a game against Solomon in the coming weeks.

Finally, as we head to the end of term, we have exams, SACs and loads of work to get done. Remember to pace yourselves, have short breaks while studying and don’t forget your teachers are here to support you.  Stay focused, look after each other and keep smiling Benilde!
